12 April So yesterday, House of D was playing at SAG, so I decided to go to Queens and see Esther Faye after work, then go to the 8.30p showing afterwards. So I was hanging around Le's house, playing on the computer and cuddling with the cat, when I looked at the time. If I had left that very second, I would have made the movie on time, but I had to take out the garbage and water the plants, how much did I want to rush my ass off? So I checked on IMDB and found two very important pieces of information. One, that it got bad reviews, and two, that it had Robin Williams in it. That was enough for me to want to stay with the cat and water the plants at my leisure. I later found out that not only is Robin Williams in it, but he plays a retarded janitor. Whew, I sure dodged that bullet!
I brought my computer and watched Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill with the commentary. Now, I thought that the idea of a one-man show with commentary by that one man, talking about himself while watching him talk about himself, was perhaps a trifle too meta, but it ended up being rather interesting. He talked about the nature of comedy and how you write a show and whether what he says is absolutely true or not. I started to watch the French version, but had to concentrate too hard to understand, and then that commentary he does in both French and English, and I thought that my head would explode, so I gave myself permission not to watch every single frame of every single extra on this particular DVD.
While I was on my way to the subway to see Esther Faye, I happened to glance into the local DVD store, and they were having a sale! A really good sale! A $7.99 sale! So I went in. O dear me. I ended up getting seven DVDs. Pretty much all of them, though, I would happily have payed more for, they really weren't so much impulse buys as DVDs I meant to get someday, but eight at once seemed a bit over the top. I got Raising Arizona, Die Hard, Bend it Like Beckham, Speed, Broadcast News, Alfie (the proper one), and Picture Perfect. Picture Perfect was the only one that it never occurred to me to get before, and probably wouldn't if it wasn't $7.99, but it's a movie that I have never forgotten, even though I only saw it once. I think it's a really under-rated romantic comedy. It's probably the reason that I like Jay Mohr so much, and why I think of him as being a much more sympathetic actor than most other people do, having only see him play the skeevy characters. In Picture Perfect, he plays the romantic lead, and he's extremely charming and likeable.
When I got home, I finally poured Liquid Plumr down the tub drain, because otherwise I'll never be able to shower again, and I think that eventually they might start complaining where I work. I poured half the bottle, rinsed it, then poured the other half of the bottle. After I poured the other half, I was walking out of the room and I heard that awful "bloop bloop bloop", and water just started blooping all over the floor and all up in the tub. Sigh. I went to my room and gathered up all of the sheets and towels that I could find and spread them all over the bathroom floor, and went upstairs to wrest my plunger back from Fran (it turns out he thought it was theirs, apparently since it's been in their bathroom for the past couple of years). The funny thing was, later, when the water drained from the tub, there was all this gravel in the tub that apparently came up the drain. Why were there rocks in the drain? But when I cleaned them out and ran water down the drain, it seemed to drain out nicely, so perhaps this plumbing drama is over.
