1 October So yesterday I picked up the kids from school so that Cynthia could go and see the movie at SAG, which she didn't go to see after all, but she had errands to run, so I picked up the kids still. Actually, part of her errands took place at the post office, so we actually ran into her when Molly and I picked up Bonnie, and we got a ride home in the car. It is only a couple of blocks, but hey, I'm not turning down a ride when it looks like rain. It didn't rain, but that's hardly the point. Then I brought them into the city, had dinner with them at the place that I go to with Mark that has half-priced happy-hour drinks and appetizers that you can make into a good cheap dinner, then dropped them off at rehearsal with Fran and went to the SAG movie myself.
I was hoping that I'd see Mark when I dropped them off, but Fran was annoyingly right in the hallway, waiting for us. I haven't seen him since the show closed, and I have wanted to see him, no matter how much he made it perfectly clear that he's not interested in me at all. Actually, I did see him on Monday, when I dropped the box office off at rehearsal, and he seemed to be looking brightly wistful at me. I may be reading things into it, but no, brightly wistful was the look on his face, I'm sure of it. I wanted to see if I'd see that look again. After the movie, I popped back round to see if it was still going on, so that I could take the kids home. Yeah, that's the only reason I stopped by. Yup. That's it. I'll bet there's one or two people I'm fooling on that one. Also, I'm helping to paint the set tomorrow, also just to be helpful. Not because it's possible Mark might be there. Nope, I just love painting sets. It's my life.
So the movie. It's sort of nice getting there in a leisurely manner, early enough to even hear the announcements. Clearly, the way to achieve that end is to leave the house at 6p to hit the 8.30p movie. That way I manage not to be running through the door as they are trying to lock it in my face. The movie itself was Stage Beauty, and you know how Fran always teases me about how every movie is The Best Film Ever? And how just a couple of days ago, I saw The Best Film Ever? Well, Stage Beauty is the best film ever, too. It's about how, in the time of Charles II, only men were allowed on the stage, so men played women. Until Charles II changed the law to make it illegal for men to play women, so while women could now act, the men who had only played women were out of work. Billy Crudup plays the greatest male-female actor in London, and Claire Danes is his dresser, a woman who desperately wants to act. And then she can, and he can't. O God, I'm making it sound so trite, but it's glorious, and I think it will play to an audience not entirely made out of actors. It's really wonderful, great performances, great story, and I totally forgive Billy Crudup for running out on Mary Louise Parker while she was eight months pregnant--you can really see him and Claire Danes falling in love during the course of the movie. Also, Rupert Everett as King Charles, Ben Chaplin as Billy's lover, Tom Wilkinson as Othello to Billy's Desdemona, Hugh Bonneville as Pepys, Richard Griffiths as a horrible old bastard, and a newcomer named Zoe Tapper as Nell Gwynn are all terrific. It's a toss-up whether I love this movie or Finding Neverland more. I do know one thing, that both of them I will see again as soon as I am able to.
You'll never guess what I just did. After reading Mo's entries haranguing her readers to do so, I finally registered to vote! Of course, I've always been registered to vote, but I've spent the last eight years traveling back to Park Slope to vote, mostly because I tend to care more about the local NY races than NJ, but I decided that enough was rather enough, and I am registered to vote in the state of New Jersey. Or at least I will be, once they get the letter. Which I hope they do before the 5th. I told Cynthia, and she said that I did so just in the nick, since, apparently, New Jersey is now a swing state. Who knew? I just remember what Stef said about how Bush lost NJ by 16% in 200 and it was likely to be similar this year. Well it seems that is no longer true, and now My Vote is Important. I'll want gifts and kisses if he loses New Jersey. The state in which I am now registered to vote.
Caught up with Mimi Smartypants and Nicky.
