(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

27 May

Don't worry, no long stories about my sleeping habits this morning. Suffice it to say that I got up in time for breakfast (the best carrot-on-a-stick ever), but they didn't slip in an extra free hashbrown like they've been doing the last few days.

I sunbathed on Monday, got some lovely colour and decided to work on my back yesterday. The rain stopped that notion flat. I'm going to end up being browned on one side like a cookie, I can see it happening.

I've been jonesing for a brownie cake since I made one for Cynthia's birthday, only took a little bit of it downstairs and inhaled it within a day. So I made a cake! Because I can make a cake anytime I want one and then eat it up! One of the good things about being an adult.

My brownie cake recipe uses buttermilk, and of course the whole thing about buttermilk is that it's not possible to actually use up an entire quart or whatever of it before it expires. On the other hand, I just bought it a month ago and wasn't really interested in buying more.

It was only separated, so I shook it up and smelled it and it smelled fine, so I put it in the cake. And you know what? Expired buttermilk is exactly like unexpired buttermilk, because what buttermilk is is expired milk. So as long as it actually hasn't got any chunks in it, use freely! That was your cooking tip for the day.

Then I went in to BB Kings to see Glenn Tilbrook play.

I think I have seen him seven times now, four times at the Mercury Lounge solo, once at the Fleadh with Squeeze, and then later that night at the Mercury Lounge with Squeeze. This is the first time I have seen him with a band that wasn't Squeeze, and I thought that they would be a generic backing band.

I could not have been more wrong.

This was a great band, not a bunch of nobodies backing the star, they all had strong personalities of their own. The keyboard player was a madman, flailing around hilariously, while the bass player was an incredibly cool girl who mostly stood still with her hips jutted out. The drummer was incredibly cool, like a great blonde carthorse, snapping gum and pounding away with such powerful strokes that it looked like they'd knock you out if he hit you in the head, but so casually that it was as if it took no effort at all. It was incredibly hot.

I may have seen him six other times, and two of those times were with Squeeze, but except for the fact that I really missed Chris (he and Glenn were born to sing together, and he just doesn't sound as good solo), but this was without question the best show ever. It was so full of joy and the feeling of fun. You could really tell that they all like each other and can't wait to get on that stage and play.

We all sang along with "Is That Love" and "Goodbye Girl", and when he started playing "Black Coffee in Bed" and the guitar amplifier stopped working, we all sang the guitar part, "da-da-da deh daaah daaah da-da-da-da", while the four of them danced around the room. It was the most spontaneous-seeming concert ever. For an encore, he did "Take Me I'm Yours", and that's really when I missed Chris, but it was okay. I forgave him, because this group was so good.

Here is a gallery of pictures from this tour, though not including last night's show, of course. But you can see Glenn looking exactly like Fran when his hair is too long.

Been watching A Fine Romance on DVD from Netflix, which I don't like as much as As Time Goes By, but I do like it very much.

The funny thing, though, is the theme song just doesn't work. First of all, Judi Davis, though a wonderful actor, is not the best singer ever to have walked down the pike, but also, the song just doesn't rhyme in British English! Tomato and potato don't rhyme unless you say "potahto", a word that no-one has ever said in history outside of the lyrics of "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off".

Not to mention the fact that the words chance and romance don't rhyme in British either, as in: "We might as well play bridge with my maiden aunt/Love hasn't got a chance/This is a fine romance", so basically the whole song suddenly turns into blank verse.

This is one of the best things I've ever read about acting.

Today's horoscope:
These are uncertain times. Thank goodness you're such a rock. Now don't be mad if everyone else isn't. You can only expect so much from mere mortals.

Yesterday I sat around doing nothing all day, what a bore. I am almost certain to grow moss soon.
