(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

26 May

So this morning I woke up after hitting snooze twice (once being in my sleep, because I don't remember it ringing three times), looked at my phone, saw that I had nine minutes to get to McDonald's in time for breakfast, threw on my clothes and was out the door without even going to the bathroom first.

It was raining, and I had to pee. If I hadn't gotten my breakfast, I would have been very sad indeed, but they scraped together something for me and even had a clean bathroom for me to use, so all was well and it was worth getting up after only six hours of sleep.

And no, I don't know why on earth I think that the Adventures of My Getting Enough/Not Getting Enough Sleep make for riveting reading, but when I wake up of a morning, the first thing I think is, "I really have to write about this!"

So yesterday I actually dragged myself into the city and picked up my hold books at the Donnell library (paying off my fine from last year), bought my ticket to see Glenn Tilbrook tonight, and went to see two movies! Because if I'm going to the city on a day when I don't have to work, I'm getting the most out of it.

I went to see Shrek 2 and Kill Bill Vol. 2. It was a day of sequels! And quite good ones, by the way. I saw Shrek 2 first at the Loews on 42nd St., and I honestly believe that it's as good as Shrek, if not better. And how often can you say that about a sequel? I ask you.

I loved Puss in Boots, as essayed by Antonio Banderas, this going back to my great love of Teddy in A.I., cute fuzzy characters with deep men's voices just put me away. My favourite thing in the whole movie, though, was Puss in his Spanish accent introducing himself as "Poos een Buts!" I kept repeating it all night, "Pray for mercy from Poos...een Buts!" It's a good thing I live alone.

Anyway, the key to a good sequel is not to make the original movie all over again because that's boring, but not to make something so different that if you love the original you won't care for the sequel at all. Well, Shrek 2 walked that ragged edge of disaster beautifully.

The story was different enough and similar enough, the new characters were as good as the familiar ones (I did miss Farquaad), and the music was as good--the original both introduced me to my favourite song, "Hallelujah" and to Rufus Wainwright (via the cd, not the film), and the sequel has a great song called "Accidentally in Love" that I think will be my new fave.

Kill Bill Vol. 2, across the street at the AMC, was quite good, though I think that I liked Vol. 1 better. I don't recall sections where I drifted off in Vol. 1, and there were one or two in Vol. 2, but every time David Carradine was on the screen, I perked up. And I loved the kid, that was the most natural performance by a child actress that I have ever seen. I was glad that I guessed the name right, though. It wasn't that hard a word to lip-read, but I was still all proud.

It was a good day. I even went to Starbucks and got a chai creme Frappuccino and then went home and dyed my hair! It don't get much better than that. I must remember next time, though, to plan my day so that I don't go to the library first and subsequently have to lug around the heavy bag of books all day.

Amaya started up again, and right away he had a tragedy. I'm so sorry, Steve. But I'm glad you're back.

Today's horoscope:
By the time afternoon arrives, that wistful look you've been wearing for the past few days will have changed. At that point, whatever you feel will be quite obvious. Prepare!

One year ago today:
Well, at least I got the opportunity to watch a really good TV show called The Shakespeare Conspiracy. Apparently, the Earl of Oxford wrote Shakespeare's plays. Who knew?
