(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

17 May

The other day I was talking on the phone to Sara Astruc, and we finished by saying, "Let's get together soon!" Of course, we say shit like that and never do get together, but I thought I'd take the bull by the horns and try to arrange something.

I emailed Tracing and Sara, saying that I was free all day Sunday and Monday and Tuesday nights if we wanted to get together, and they both said that they were free on Sunday. Tracing suggested that we go out to her house in Brooklyn, and we all agreed. So we got together yesterday on short notice and Sara actually left Manhattan!

Most of the time when we try to get together, we cannot manage to find time when we are all free without doing backflips and sacrificing chickens and so on, and we never do anything but have Chinese food at Sara's house. Which is totally fun, but this whole having schedules link up and travel to the wilds of Brooklyn made me ask suspiciously if Sara had been replaced by aliens.

I did end up being an hour late, because I was not the one who was replaced by aliens (it's a good thing Eliza and I don't live closer to each other, as my chronic lateness would drive her crazy!), because I overslept quite shamefully, and by the time I got there I was absolutely famished, so I called them while I was walking down the street, saying "I'm here! I'm here! I'm starving!" so that they would run out the door quick like bunnies.

Which they did not in fact do. But we did make it to the restaurant before I had to eat my own hand, so that was okay. The place was really cute, with outdoor seating in the back, and a small brunch menu.

I, after suspiciously grilling Tracing about the pancakes, which did not seem to be normal pancakes in the menu description, ordered the pancakes. Which turned out to be quite good, if odd! There were all these bits of melon and so on on them, which I tipped onto Sara's french toast, an a couple of pools of lemon curd that I ate around, but the oddest thing was the texture. It was more like a thick crepe than a regular pancake, it seemed to only be cooked on one side and was crispy round the edges. It was really good!

Later on, at home, I was talking to Mom on the phone, and she mentioned a kind of pancake that her housekeeper made when she was a kid, baked in a pan in the oven, which sounded just like what I had eaten. So, in a complete co-incidence, I went to a restaurant in Brooklyn and got my mother's favourite childhood Belgian dish!

It was a gorgeous day. Very blue sky contrasting beautifully with the red brick buildings, I wished that my digital camera wasn't broken.

After brunch, we walked back to Tracing's house and hung out in the very leafy backyard. had there been a rake, Sara and I would have cleared the ground, but fortunately there wasn't one, so we could sit on our asses instead. After clearing my own backyard, though, I'm big on the raking, and actually would have had a blast!

We lazed and talked and smoked (Sara and me) before we finally had to wrench ourselves away and toddle off home.

Today it is nicely clouded over and humid, yesterday it was sunny and gorgeous. Rarely does it work out that way, that the one day that you are getting together with friends is the prettiest day, but for once it was. I guess Sara's alien replacement can also control the weather.

Got home and watched the final episode of The Practice. Am I dreaming, or are they setting up Jimmy's new law firm as another spinoff? There are an awful lot of new characters added just for a series that is in the crapper.

So we have a director. So we are on. And now I can get excited. Which I did for about four seconds before I realized that I pretty much never leave the stage for the entire play, and boy is this a huge role that I have to learn! And I have nobody to blame but my own little self.
