11 May So yesterday I went to see Troy at SAG with Moira. I went into the city early to pick up a copy of Talking With... from Drama Books. I need to read the monologues, especially the two that we didn't do when we did the show at NYU. I remembered that one of them we didn't do because the piece requires ten working lamps on the stage, but couldn't remember why the other one was cut. Now I know. It's called Scraps, and the actress is dressed up as the Patchwork Girl from Oz. Full patchwork costume, including patchwork head. Forget it, I thought, too much trouble. Then I read it and fell in love. I can't cut it! But how the hell will I do the costume? And who the hell will I get to play it? It's not as easy to cast as some of the others. Maybe Wende? I don't know.
I was so early (I know! Go figure!) that even after going to Drama Books and picking up new ticket rolls at Staples, I still had time to grab some food before meeting Moira at the theatre. Fortunately, I was less than a block away from the theatre, since Moira called me on my cell to tell me that the line was really long, and I should probably get there. I did so, and thanks to Moira we had a better place in line than Sigourney Weaver! The movie was great fun, I enjoyed it very much. Not the least reason being all of the naked Brad Pitt all over the place. Now, I've never particularly found him that attractive--I mean, I know that he's handsome, I do see that, but personally I've never found his face that interesting. However. With the new body that he made for himself for this movie, from the neck down he is quite stunning. Eric Bana with his shirt off was also quite a sight to see. The battle scenes are terrific, most of the acting was excellent, though Brad should have done something about his diction, as he kept calling Brian Cox "Ag'memnon". Brian Cox, however, was great, and clearly having a whale of a time. Peter O'Toole was looking quite frail, I'm a trifle worried about him. I wondered why he accepted the role, since mostly all he had to do was stand on balconies watching battles, but then he had one scene that was so kick-ass that I got it immediately. In a word, my capsule review is: "Ancient Greece! A time of dreadlocks and hair jewelry for men!" Which doesn't say much about the movie, but hey, I think it's funny!
Afterwards, we went to Vynl, where I haven't been in quite a while, and we had a very hot waiter, bringing my hot waiter quotient for the week to two. When we came in and sat down though, a waiter that knows me came up to me holding a cake stand. It's back! The lemon cake is back! My letter worked! You know, three years late. Actually, it's only back for the summer, but I'll be eating there a lot in the summer, I can see the future. I was pretty full after dinner, but I had to have dessert. After the Ceremonial Presentation of the Cake, I could do nothing else! It was pretty good, though less lemony than I remembered. The icing was still perfect, though.
I came home afterwards and was so tired that I couldn't keep my eyes open, and I ended up going to bed at 9p. Keeping up with my tradition, though, I only slept for three hours. At midnight I was so awake that I just decided to get up and watched Jonathan Creek and The Restaurant which was enough for the TiVo to accept the notion of not erasing every other programme on it. Then I watched the pilot of Firefly on DVD. I've had it for months but haven't watched it, because you know me, I don't need to watch it if I own it. I really do not understand their not showing it, it's wonderful. After all that, I was tired enough to go to sleep again. And stay asleep for the rest of the night.
Speaking of The Restaurant, in re poor little whiney Jeannine doing a shot at the bar/not doing a shot at the bar, I'm still waiting for someone on this show to say "For crying out loud, I was being followed around by 17 cameras, check the goddamn tape!" I'll say that the waiters were mildly better actors last year. Last night that one server awkwardly recited, "Hi Carrie, I'm Ralph...I mean, hi Ralph, I'm Carrie. What are you doing here?" as though she were reading it off of cue cards held slightly too far away for comfort.
Audrey Puente (the weather forecaster on CBS News at Noon) says lingering with a soft "g" sound, like "sing" instead of a hard "g" like in, well, linger. I must remember to tell Mom, since I'm always giving her a hard time about that. I wonder if ol' Audrey says "You're driving me banana" as well?
I'm having an invasion of tiny little grey ladybug-like thingies. I have no idea what they are, but on the whole, as far as bug invasions go, I far prefer them to flying ants.
