27 January Thoughts while watching the Oscar nominations announcements: Wow, Patricia Clarkson nominated for Pieces of April rather than The Station Agent, that's a surprise! And the Iranian actress from House of Sand and Fog, I hear she's great but didn't really expect to see her over the terrific Hope Davis. And I really didn't care for Marcia Gay Hardin in Mystic River, I could see her acting every single minute. Renee has a lock on it, I think. Djimon Hounsou! I love Djimon Hounsou! And I think I could pronounce his name better than Sigourney Weaver did, but maybe I have it wrong in my head. He was so great in In America. Love Benicio Del Toro, very happy there, but I am sorry that Stephen Sarsgaard wasn't recongized. But of course, if they were the exact same nominations as the Golden Globes (or the Ga-LOBES), then there would be no point in having more than one set of awards, now would they? O my God, the kid from Whale Rider! There's a shock. Not that she wasn't great, I'm certain, but most children get nominated in the supporting category even if their role was a lead. Very very pleased about Samantha Morton, whom I am on record as saying that she is the best actress of her generation, bar nobody. I am sorry that Scarlett was overlooked, but probably her two roles canceled each other out. Clearly I have to see 21 Grams. Yay Johnny Depp! He doesn't have an actual chance to win, but it was such a brave, balls-out performance that was so right for the role and so right for the movie that it is wonderful that it was recognized, even though it was both comedy and in a movie based on a ride at Disneyland. And Bill Murray, at last. I supposed he had to get screwed over Rushmore for this to finally happen. Heavens, what the hell is City of God that was nominated for Best Director? Am I wrong in thinking it's a foreign language picture? There's always one peculiar thing in this category. Yay Sofia! Wow, Finding Nemo got nominated for Original Screenplay! That's really amazing for an animated film. And I'm so pleased for In America. I don't think I've even heard of The Barbarian Invasions. Yay Sofia again! Very happy about American Splendour getting for Adapted Screenplay. The screenplay categories is really where the unusual can get recognized. Ah, Barbarian Invasions is a French-Canadian film. Wow, Master and Commander is nominated for Best Picture after getting not one other major nomination! No, wait, never mind, Peter Weir got a direction nomination. And according to Matt Lauer, it got ten nominations, but it must have been in all of the other categories not announced. Cold Mountain didn't get nominated for hardly anything, or The Last Samurai. They said that the short schedule would screw over the smaller films, but with major nominations for Pieces of April, In America, City of God, Lost in Translation and 21 Grams, they were quite wrong.
I love TiVo. Of course, I could have taped Today and still have been able to sleep in, but I probably wouldn't have bothered. Okay, maybe I could have done the whole thing without TiVo, but I still stand by my original statement: I love TiVo. So there.
Good news re my bald skull! I got a letter from my doctor stating that apparently I have telogen effluvium, not androgenetic alopecia, which is male and female pattern baldness. You see, all of our hair follicles go through stages of growth, rest and transition--not all of our follicles are actively growing hair at all times. Normally, 85% to 90% of the follicles would be in the production part of the cycle and 10% to 15% would be resting (aka telogen), with less that 1% being in the transition part of the cycle. Now when you have telogen effluvium, that means that an abnormal number of the follicles are resting at the same time. This can happen for many reasons--childbirth, starting or stopping birth control, having surgery, being in a car accident, anemia, thyroid disease, lots of things that have nothing to do with me, and stress, which does. The good thing about it is that it just goes away. It usually happens two to four months after the triggering event and goes away on its own, though Rogain can help increase the number of follicles in the growing cycle and can certainly help. Omar made my hair fall out! It wasn't enough for him to drive me into therapy and make me start smoking again, he also had to make my hair come out in clumps. Anyway, yay! It's not permanent, it will fix itself, and I won't be bald as an egg by 40.
