13 January So yesterday first thing we got a call from the store and the woman had called and was returning my bag of clothes. And, because this was the third day of the sale, my sweater that was 50% off was going for 70% off. Which is nice, but it's no free purse. So we went back over there, and I asked loudly for the purse, and Mom said no, and the salesgirl asked which purse? I pointed to the red leather fringed one hanging on the 70% rack, and she went off to confer with the other saleslady while I casually watched Mom try on a multi-coloured sweater, that she ended up deciding to buy. When she brought it up to the counter, they knocked more off of the already 70% off price of the sweater, and gave us the purse for $30. That's $110 off! I now own a $140 purse! I cannot imagine ever actually spending that amount on any purse for any reason, unless it gave massages and washed dishes and was covered in gold leaf. But this purse I adore, and they were so sweet to give us the additional discount. Which I think they did because we were so nice about their giving my clothes away to somebody else! You get more flies with honey than vinegar. (or do you?)
After that, we went to meet the photographer who is going to do my headshots. I haven't had real, professional headshots done for at least a decade. My old ones are too old, my face was thinner and my hair isn't like that anymore, and subsequently I used a shot that Tracing took of me and one that I took of myself, but neither of them were really useful, more stop-gap shots than real shots. So we asked my mother's agent for recommendations, and they had several, but there was one who had stars next to his name, which was in bold and underlined, so we got the impression that they liked him best, because we are all intelligent that way. So we went round to his house to look at his book, since he doesn't have a website. It's silly not to have a website, but on the other hand, being forced to meet someone in person is good, because you get an idea of what he would be like to work with. I liked David right away, I liked his shots, I liked his dog, and he had a slot on Wednesday morning that he could fit me in! So it worked out great.
After meeting David and Travis (the dog, as sweet and friendly as a store cat), I went to lunch with Rita at the Grove. I swan, I've never heard of this place in my life, and I go there three times this vacation! Actually. we ended up eating at the Farmer's Market instead of the Grove, but they are basically attached, and I did park in the Grove parking lot, so that counts. Then I went home and picked up Mom and we went to see her friend Molly and Molly's roommate John for voice-over advice. Molly wrote a book on VO, and John produced or directed over 500 radio spots, so they had a lot to say about my demo, but mostly we just sat around and chatted. They are having a party on Saturday that I was grateful to be missing, as I hate parties, but now I'm sorry to miss it because they were both so nice and fun. We ended up going out to dinner and not getting home until 11p. Which would normally be fine, except that we had to get up this morning at 4a! Why? Tune in tomorrow for details...
Remember, I am looking for a designer to knock off a logo for the one-act that Omar and I are doing together, Flora, Horror and Java, so if anyone is interested in submitting something, I would be extremely grateful! Details here, or just drop me an email for more info.
