27 February So last night the show closed. I'm sorry that it's over, but on the other hand this was an exhausting experience, moreso than had I been directing it rather than acting in it. There were weird mistakes, ones that had never happened before, like I forgot to set the rose, as I realized as I reached out my hand to pick it up after Lee died. I blanched, then took the black feather out of Omar's hand and used that. And the next time he came onstage, he brought a Gerber daisy from the lobby, which I thought was quite sweet of him. Also, I forgot to rouge my nipples, so the Green Tea boob reveal wasn't as good as usual, although luckily there was lipstick on my bra from the previous performances, so they showed a bit. And Jim forgot to knock on the door, and we had to react as though there had been a knock on the door anyway, or the play could not continue (I said, "Did you hear something?" about a complete silence), and then he was slower again, though not as bad as on opening night. It turned out that he was sick, that he was nearly throwing up in the dressing room, which is why he missed that door cue. Considering that, his performance was actually much better than it should have been under the circumstances!
The great thing about doing this show is that it feels as though we previewed it out of town and now know everything that is wrong with the script and things that need fixing. Also, lines that never worked but we aren't changing because the reason that they never worked is because the actor in question never delivered it right (that actor in question sometimes being me or Omar). Or lines that never worked because the audience just wasn't smart enough to get them! So when we do it again, the script will be even better and tighter and the show will be as good as it can be. The other thing I would like for the next time we do it is to have the cast that we originally envisioned. Not that the cast that we had was bad, not by any stretch of the imagination, but Michael just was never quite right--for a funny man, he doesn't really have the best comic timing, and Jim and Lee were fine, but I'd just like to see our original cast, Cynthia, Fran and Philip, in those roles. Next time.
