25 December Merry Christmas Internet! Normally, I still get up at the crack of God on Christmas morning, but this morning I actually stayed abed until 8.30a--that's halfway through the afternoon by Christmas morning standards. In my bed, I opened my stocking, lying under my little gold tinsel tree where it always lies. It was a pretty good stocking, especially since Mom had remarked that she didn't have anything for it. I told her that she had to find something and that was that. I may be 40 years old, but Christmas is Christmas. I got a bunch of little things, and two fairly biggish presents, tickets to the Rose Parade and two days in a spa in Desert Hot Springs! No wonder Mom said some months ago that I had better not have any plans for New Years day (of course I'm still going to Tamar's, but I'll be a little late). The spa she'll call today and see if we can go on Monday.
So yesterday we went to Century City, because we can't possibly have Christmas without going to Century City. We decided that it would be okay to go on Christmas Eve day if we got there super super early, which we didn't, but even not as early as we planned there was still plenty of parking. Hooray! I got my caramel apple at the food court, because it's just not Christmas morning for me without a caramel apple, and we went to Victoria's Secret and I managed to whine Mom into getting me five new pairs of panties, and we got this year's new ornament from Restoration Hardware. It's very simple and pretty, it's a bell. I made Mom get this faded green corduroy hat with roosters on it at some store or another. I would have gotten it for her myself as a present, but I had neither the $10 that I thought it cost nor the $5 that it actually cost, so I had to force her to get it for herself. It was one of those distress kind of hats, pre-worn and faded, and in a bucket style, which is Mom's favourite kind of hat. It was so cute, but Mom kept saying "Why should I get it? I don't need another hat," and I would answer, "Because it has roosters on it! Everyone needs a hat with roosters on it!" She finally broke down and got it, which is when we found out that it was only $5, so that was a treat. And she ended up really liking it and being glad that I talked her into it. But honestly, who needs to be talked into a hat with roosters on it? I ask you.
Then we came home and I decorated the tree, which was a little tricky, cramming all of the ornaments onto a tree half the size as usual, but I did my level best, and but up the wreaths and put the stuffed Santas and snowmen and angels all over the living room, and set up the creche. Then I wrapped presents (I had ordered Mom's stuff from Amazon using some gift certificates that I had from them, and they just arrived in time) while watching Meet Me in St. Louis, Holiday Inn and Miracle on 34th St. We didn't go to midnight mass this year, because Father Gallagher had insanely changed the time to 10p. Seriously. Midnight mass was at 10p this year. Which kind of wrecks the point of midnight mass, but Father Gallagher, whom I adore, sometimes has some really dumb ideas. Instead, we stayed home and did the aforementioned wrapping, and I made my pumpkin pie. I haven't made one for years, preferring to make bread pudding, but Mom asked me to do the pumpkin pie thing this year, and I agreed. It really is a very good recipe. We had gotten the ingredients a day or two before, including a pint of cream. The recipe calls for half a pint, but I needed the other half to make the whipped cream to go on top. Can you tell what's coming? Yep, poured in the entire pint of cream, and since that's what you put in last, it meant that the entire pie was awash. Fortunately, it was before 9p when the store closed, so I jumped in the car and went to get more ingredients and another pie shell, because the only thing to do was to double the recipe and make two pies! Which worked perfectly, but what we are going to do with two pumpkin pies, I don't know. Maybe I'll bring one to Tamar's on New Year's Day. Anyway, it was a good Christmas Eve and it's been a great Christmas--much better than last year when Mom and I fought like wolverines and I was so miserable over Omar. I hope yours was good too, if you celebrate, and if not, I hope you at least had a day off!
