7 April So yesterday was Babette's Feast at the Glendale library. Mom wanted to go too, as that's one of her favourite movies ever, but had a last-minute print audition. I had never seen it before, though I had heard good things. Well, I was so glad that I went! What a wonderful, charming movie! It's about the lives of these two good women in Denmark, daughters of a minister, who turned away love and material comfort in order to do charitable works and live religious lives in their tiny town. We see the story of their lives, and along the way they end up with a French widow as their servant, the Babette of the title. Years go by, and one day Babette wins the lottery, and she decides to cook a gourmet French dinner for the ladies and their guests in honour of their father's centenary. Man, that is the dullest synopsis ever. But of course, all synopses are equally so for this movie, which is why I'm only getting around to seeing it now. Who wants to see a Danish movie about a meal? But you know what? You do, it's absolutely lovely.
On my way out of the movie, I thought I'd pop by Gateway just to say goodbye to Zabi, and they were having a sale! Of course they were, the store was closing, but I never really thought about it, because it's not as though they aren't still going to be selling these items online and so on. Had I thought about it, I would have come on Saturday or something, since the pickin's were slim. I did get a little MP3 player for $30 instead of $70, only 65 megs but worth it for the money, also an optical mouse and a European plug coverter kit, which was so cheap I couldn't pass it up. Honestly, it was like $5 and someday I will take my computer to Europe and will need to convert my plug! And no, I haven't forgotten that this is supposed to be my no-buying year, but this sale was too good and I do need these things, so I gave myself a by.
Then I started looking around for Zabi and couldn't find him, so I left a message and started to leave just as he was coming through the front door. I told him that the first thing that Mom and I thought when we heard about the Gateway stores closing was, "O no, Zabi will be out of a job!" and the guy with him said, "Quite the opposite, actually..." so I said, "You mean we should have been saying, 'Hooray! Lucky Zabi won't have to work for those fucking people anymore, the long nightmare is over!'?" and the other guy laughed and said yeah, that was more like it, including the epithet! So, congrats, Zabi! You can move on with your life and no more fucking Gateway!
When I got home, I was sitting on the couch reading, when my phone rang. It was Cathey, from the agency. They turned me down. I was actually really surprised, since my audition went really well, and especially after the booth director told me that I was better than most of the people that they already have at the agency. Unfortunately, the booth director is not an agent, because the agents did not concur. I was disappointed, but I felt that I had done the best I could do and if they didn't want me, there wasn't a lot I could do about it. When Mom came home I told her, and she was really disappointed as well and started talking about trying to get another agent in LA, but I thought that I don't live here, and I want to go home and try to get an agent there. So I'm going back on Monday in time for Of Mice and Men's opening.
