19 September Rehearsed last night at Michael's house, which was a bit of a bother, since he lives way the fuck uptown and I always forget how long it's going to take me to get anywhere, especially when I go by bus. Busses take forever. Try to remember that. I started from downtown, too, since I first picked up the colour proofs of the Lancaster shots (my God, they are great), and then had to wait centuries for the one bus that would take me to Riverside Drive, and when that one bus came, it passed me by and I had to wait even longer for the next one, and by that time I was plenty late already, but I had put in so much time waiting that I couldn't then go to the subway and wait there. And when the bus finally came, it took an hour to go 90 blocks. Which is not unreasonable, except for the fact that I was then 45 minutes late to my own rehearsal. I got them on their feet, we did what is called "free blocking", meaning that the actors run the scenes and walk around, making up their own blocking. Or, in this case, sitting down and not moving an inch unless specifically called for in the lines. Free blocking is good, though not for the reasons that actors think it is good. Actors think free blocking gives them a chance to see how their characters want to move, so they can find the motivation for their moving, but actually it's so that the director can see them do it so appallingly badly that she sees the right way to block.
