4 May So yesterday was tech for the new show. We don't open until Wednesday, but because a different show opens Monday we had to tech four days early. Since we started rehearsing so late and Elysabeth never stops talking in the show I got permission for her to call line if necessary, usually a nono at tech. She did need it twice, but generally it went extremely well. The lurching when the pretend car started and stopped was generally good, though not entirely symmetrical, and we got a lot of laughs. The sweetness of the piece really came through. I was very proud of my little actors. The whole evening is quite good. They do one of Tennessee Williams' most moving one-acts, Talk to Me Like the Rain and three of Le's plays that I haven't sen in awhile. I think when Omar comes I'll sit through the whole show again.
After tech I had time to kill before running the box office at night, so I went to see Holes at the AMC. I loved it! I mean totally, really. I adore the book, and they really did a lovely job with it. Tim Blake Nelson was great as always, and the kids were perfectly cast. Stanley not being fat didn't bother me, since they didn't instead cast a teen idol kid or anything, and all of the beautiful structure and everything coming together was right on. The funny thing was that my mother loved it when she saw it, but when I talked to her about it, she didn't get the point of nearly anything of the various denouements, but she still loved it.
Then was the show, which was an absolute zoo. We sold out, and by sold out I mean sold every single chair and had to put down a couple more. What happened to all of the extra chairs? We had a whole extra row during Orpheus piled up and ready for use when necessary, but they were not to be found and I had to steal them from the dressing room. I actually had more people coming but I had them start the show before they came up in the elevator because it was getting late and I hadn't a damn place to put them. Fortunately, they were all for the third and fourth shows, so missing the first wasn't a thing. And I knew that I'd have people leave after the first so there would be room. It reminded me of the good old days of the Samuel French festival.
Jesus, check out that one year ago entry. That's more of my true self than I tend to share, my real raw yearning for home and family and partnership. And nothing has changed, not a word, I still want that more than ever and am no closer to it. And I still believe with all of my soul that I will have that someday.
Lenten entries missed: Scalzi got all fucking bloggy, got four out of six right on his Oscar picks, put a list up of everyone he reads and not including me because he hates me and wishes I was dead, signed his book contract, played no April Fool's jokes, talked about his best friend from second grade, became a big brother, his daughter learned to read, and he interviewed the Easter Bunny.
