18 February So yesterday was The Big Snow, and by The Big Snow I mean Storm of the Century stuff. It was really coming down on Sunday night, and when I woke up yesterday morning it was actually over my windows. Keep in mind, of course, that it's a basement apartment, but still, lots of snow. I called work a couple of times and nobody was there, but mostly because that was before the office opens anyway. The thing is that you don't get paid for a snow day unless you show up, so I thought I'd go in then turn around and come home again. This is because I am a big doof. So I went out to the boulevard, big doof that I am, and stood in the middle of the street, waiting for a van. Nothing was passing but snowplows, and the sidewalks had snow to my knees, so the middle of the street was my only choice. When a plow would come by, I would walk to the other side of the street and stand there until it passed, then walk back. I'm telling you, them streets was empty! After about half an hour I decided five more minutes, and then a van came. I got on it and it was full, so I said, "What's wrong with you people? Why are you not at home?" A guy answered, "Well, what's wrong with you?" and I said, "Hey, I know I'm an idiot!" Once I got into the city, there wasn't much of a wait for the city bus and I got to work around 9.20a. The building was a ghost town. Adam and Richard from Accounting were there and Hans and Beth from Purchasing. And me from Accounts Payable. The problem was that there was nobody to decide to send everyone home, HR was empty (one of them lives three blocks away, lazy cow), none of the VPs were there, it was all a mystery. I had no intention of working, I just wanted to go home, so around 10.10 or so I called The Raccoon at home, and she said, "What are you doing there?" "I know, I know, I'm going home now!" You know how long it took me to get home? Forty minutes. You know how long it takes me to get home when we're not in the middle of a driving blizzard? Forty minutes. Did I luck out or did I luck out? I believe I lucked out. I walked up to 9th Ave. not even expecting a bus, and there it was, trundling up the street! This bus is never there at the best of times, I never expected it in a blizzard.
When I got home, I went to the store for cat food and litter and soda, all the vital storm supplies, and found a store empty of people and filled with food, not quite what I expected. Went home and dug in for the long haul. Good thing the Moon reading was canceled, as the snow just never stopped all day long. Jon came over at one point and did some shoveling, and a darn good thing too, I must say, since nobody who actually lives in this house would touch the shovel, or even could pick one out of a lineup. When the snow stopped, Fran went to the store and didn't come home for an hour. I guess everyone in town was waiting for the skies to clear before setting foot outdoors in order to denude the local Pathmark of milk and bread. It was a nice day, really, even with my going out into the blizzard like a fool. And it was Columbus Day, so I was supposed to have the day off anyway, if I worked at a more reasonable company.
Found through Utopia With Cheese, the love poetry Guardian quiz. The first poem they came up with for me was okay, but this was one of the alternates, and this was the one that really hit me hard:
The minute I heard my first love story
Lovers don't finally meet somewhere.
