14 December I woke up this morning and did one of those "I wonder why it is so light in my apartment?" things, and then I saw all of the snow. Yesterday they were talking about rain mixed with snow, but that's not what is coming down in my backyard, what I see is snow mixed with more snow. I was mulling whether I would go into the city for the matinee, now I laugh hollowly at that thought. The Christmas party is tonight, though, and I have to go in for that in order to hand out my Christmas cards, if nothing else.
Yesterday was a good day, sunny and pretty, if somewhat cold. It's been relatively warm lately, so I went out without my new hat and scarf and old mittens, which was a mistake since it was around 25° most of the day and I spent a great deal of time outside. I left the house rather late, after doing a bit of Xmas shopping online. I love Amazon Shops, I got a new book that I know my mother wants for only $10 including shipping rather than the $24 it's going for new. I ended up getting to the theatre rather late, but luckily the girl running the box has done it before, and though she made a weird mistake, it didn't require any long explanations on the BO sheet.
Afterwards, I could have gone home but decided to just stay in town until the evening show. I decided to go see the new French animated film, Les Triplets de Belleville. It was extremely peculiar, very funny and fun, but the great thing about if was just how foreign it was. I have no idea what this movie would have been like if it were made by Americans, I don't think that it would have been recognizable. It's about a sad-eyed little boy named Champion who lives with his grandmother, and who does not smile until she gives him a bicycle. Then he grows up to ride in the Tour de France, with his grandmother as his coach, but gets kidnapped by the mafia and taken to Belleville. His grandmother and dog follow to save him, with the help of the title Triplets, a singing group from the 20's who have become a trio of frog-eating old ladies. There is practically no dialogue, and most of that is French, but you get the gist of what they mean--the few lines that are important are in English. But most of it is like a silent film, just noises and faces and movement. And if you stay until the very very end after the credits, there's one last laugh, and I was the only one in my audience who saw it! It's amazing how often that happens.
After the movie there was still a couple of hours before I had to be back at the theatre, and I did a bit more shopping. I got a couple of fun things for my Secret Santa (a group of online friends and I are doing that this year) and browsed through Tower and Barnes and Noble before going back to the theatre over an hour early. It was a busy, busy show, the biggest audience ever, but Gretchen ran the box very well. So far there haven't been any problems with the money adding up at the end of the night, which is unusual, but either I'm getting smarter people or I'm training them better--possibly a combination of the two. Then I went home and watched The Price is Right Million Dollar Spectacular and Sasha Cohen fall on her ass four times and was perfectly happy.
Okay, this is hilarious. I laughed for five minutes.
