27 August So yesterday we had our auditions for the last cast member in A Doll's House. There were four people that we wanted to see, two of whom decided not to audition due to conflicts in October. Of the two that were auditioning, one was the non-company member that everybody but me thought was too old, and the other was a guy suggested by Le. The old guy, Michael, auditioned first, and after the first word out of his mouth I wanted to stop him and offer him the role. Seriously, he was brilliant, layered and subtle, it was a "see you at tech" reading, there wasn't a goddamn thing that I would have changed about his performance. The other guy didn't have a chance. He ended up being quite good, though he was far too young and he couldn't cold read at all. However, I have know enough good actors who cannot cold read to be able to see between the lines as it were, and I could see flashes that pleased me. I would have been able to get a good performance out of him, and if Michael had not been available, I would have been happy to work with him. But I didn't have to. Because I had Michael. I called him as I was walking out of the building, saying "Please please please be in my show!" and he called back laughing, "Yes yes yes!" So we are set, we are cast, and all is both hunky and dory.
After the audition, Tracing and I went to see American Splendor, a wonderful movie. I've always liked Paul Giamatti and Hope Davis, they are a couple of actors who are always strong and often the best things in their respective films (see Planet of the Apes), but these are potentially star-making performances, especially for Giamatti, who growls and scowls like a lion. Not to mention the way that the film mixes real people, actors playing those people, and comic versions of the characters. It was like Annie Hall. And, as Tracing remarked, the whole comic version of his life really reminded us of online journalling. Afterwards, Tracing and I went and ate ribs and I crowed about how great my life is going and how everything is falling into place and how clever I am. Then I came home and everything fell to shit.
