(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

7 November

I went in on the van yesterday with Fran and we got caught in the traffic from hell.

It was one of those weird things where there was a car broken down in the tunnel and we were stuck forever, but then when we got out, traffic was still backed up all over the city and we had to go via 36th St. All of that couldn't have just been from one stuck car in the tunnel, could it? You never know in NY, one drop of rain can create gridlock that would choke a horse, it's very much along the lines of the whole "butterfly flaps its wings" scenario.

So I got into the office at 11.45a and then I took an hour and a half lunch going to pick up the colour pictures and buy some zydeco cds for the Great Orpheus Descending Mix Tape.

I had been going to leave work early and start rehearsal at 7p instead of 8p so that we could make up for the extremely brief rehearsal of the night before, but Omar called and said that the job he was on was going to last until 7.45p, so we moved the rehearsal to 8p.

He got home at 8.30p, we worked II-2 into the ground, then the end of II-1. They kept forgetting their blocking until I started yelling, "What is wrong with you people? How many times do I have to block the same scenes over and over again? How come not a single person in this cast can remember a piece of blocking for longer than fifteen seconds?"

I realized that part of it is my extreme precision (aka obsessive-compulsive niggling) in that you move on this word, not on this word, and you stand on this spot, not six inches to the left of it, but it's so completely obvious to me that this way it works and no other way that I cannot get why these actors keep wandering about like baby ducks. It's like shoveling water, it's like herding cats.

And don't even get me started on facing upstage, as half of them insist on doing at any given opportunity. I cannot believe that we only did one scene and part of another in two days rather than leisurely going through all of their scenes.

The one good thing was that I got so jealous watching Omar rub Winni's shoulders in II-1 that I made him rub mine when we were done. Now that was worth waiting for.
