1 May And here is May's beautiful new design that Saudra sent me along with April's, since she thought that she might be a touch busy to design something new when the time came. Which is my cue to say what I neglected to a couple of weeks ago, congrats, Saundra, on the new production! Well done, indeed.
So last week I got an email from my friend
"I wanted to remind you that I have one more show (my latest version of "I'm the Girl" ... almost all new songs...!) next tuesday the 30th at 7:00. I remind you for two reasons: 1. you are a fabulous audience member, 2. Bart Tangredi is going to be there and thought you might like to see him!"
I immediately called Cynthia and Fran and told them that her last show was coming up, and also that Bart would be there, and they immediately made reservations. So I emailed Tracy back that she should make a flyer: 'Tracy Newirth IS The Girl in "I'm the Girl" with a special appearance by Bart Tangredi'.
She answered that that would bring everyone in but his ex-girlfriend!
So last night was the show, that I was of course late for because it started at 7p and who the hell can get anywhere at that hour, certainly not me. I was snuck in, ducking under the video camera, and ordered my two drink minimum coke.
She was terrific, of course. She's a great singer, but even a better actress, so that means that all of the songs are sung by different characters, which makes for a very enjoyable cabaret, if too short. Better to leave them wanting more, of course, but she certainly could have gone on for another twenty minutes or so without tiring the audience.
While I was watching the show, I thought of two really good songs for her, "Juliet Pauses" by Paul Bellows and
"Lady With the Braid" by Dory Previn. You see, the show is called "I'm the Girl" and the conceit is that all of the songs are sung by different girls, so those two songs, both in first person and both with such strong characters and strong stories, will be great for her to use in the next incarnation of the show.
And I didn't even think until afterwards about the fact that "Juliet Pauses" has the line in it, "The crowd jumps up, they're amazed I'm the girl who rose again from love's domain," which actually makes it fit better than I realized.
Afterwards, I looked around and said hi to my friends, and there across the room was my best beloved, most adored Bart! He moved to LA a few years ago, and I miss him very much. He reads this journal, so he doesn't miss me, because it's like he sees me every day. On the other hand, he doesn't have a journal, so it's not a fair trade. It was lovely seeing his pretty face, though, even for just a few minutes.
People drift in and out of our lives, it's such a treat to pretend for a little while that you can catch them again whenever you like.
It was like old home week at the show, Henry Davis was there too, and he told me how much he liked getting my Christmas card every year (Bart mentioned that he had to get back on the list, and Fran said, "How did you get off of it? That's impossible!" which is of course true, unless you move and don't give me your new address) and I told him that he should play Billy Petersen's brother on CSI, which he should. Rebecca was there, and Teresa, and Rich, and of course Thomas, what with him being married to Tracy and such.
I looked around thinking that everyone should have journals, dammit, as I can no longer remember how to keep in touch with people any other way.
