26 July Got to work yesterday, and the b'loon was flopped over on my desk.
"This b'loon has fallen too fast!"
God, what a gorgeous day it was yesterday. Unbearably lovely, so beautiful that I actually took a whole hour's lunch and spent it laying on the grass in that little dot of a park on the corner of 9th. Apparently, the rain that everyone was so hysterical about the other day actually broke the heat after all. I'm sorry I doubted you, weather people! Though I really could have done without the "It's a-comin'! It's a-comin'!" horseshit on the radio, but I'd put up with mounds of that stuff in order to get another day like yesterday.
The Raccoon takes half a day off every Thursday this summer to pick her daughter up from camp, which means that the rest of us have taken a half day off every Thursday as well. Okay, not really, but we sure did yesterday! I don't think anyone got a single thing done after 1.30p or so, I certainly know that I didn't. I mean, normally I have something pressing to take care of, and I work like a beaver while everyone else just stuffs their thumbs up their asses and spins around, but I had not alot that needed doing immediately, it was a beautiful day, I was feeling a little dopey and dreamy, and the boss was gone, so I wrote a couple of entries, I checked my email, I did the minimum amount of work that I could get away with. Besides, The Raccoon will be on vacation next week, so I'll be working an insane amount then, I deserve a bit of a rest now.
I watched Places in the Heart the other night, my God I had forgotten how much I love that movie. Actually, that's not true, I remembered exactly how much I loved that movie, I just didn't remember all of the reasons why. I had forgotten that astonishing last scene, and those wonderful children, who looked and sounded like real regional kids--and after my recent experience with a child actor, it's pretty amazing that I can appreciate a child's performance at this time! And Malkovich, who was robbed of an Oscar, and Danny Glover, and Ed Harris and Amy Madigan, and my beloved Terry O'Quinn, whom I think I hadn't heard of when the film came out. And Sally Field, whose performance has been overshadowed by her famous Oscar speech. What a well-scripted film. What a well-directed film. What a well-shot film. What a treat to watch.
Wahoo! At last, at last, Ty Robert has arrived! Welcome to the world, little one. You sure lucked out in the parents department.
