11 July At work yesterday, I sent this email to The Raccoon: "I have decided that X is the stupidest person alive, if not the stupidest person who has ever lived. Explaining things 90 times is never enough, on the 91st time, she still sounds surprised at the knowledge." As you may be able to guess, I am getting over some of the people that I work with. Some of them appear intelligent, I mean, they manage to come to work dressed and not get hit by cars and so on, but in truth, they are just thick as a brick. And I'm afraid that my irritation is beginning to show... Who am I kidding, it has always shown.
So, I got a phone call from Kirsten yesterday regarding Clerestory, and she will not be able to do it, what with Lady Macbeth coming so soon afterwards. It makes perfect sense, I cannot fault her in any way, but I am disappointed. But then she said, "Last night we teched the next show going up, and Ellen was in it, and I thought she'd be perfect for the show, so I asked her if she was available, and she is!" And I have no idea why, when I was casting this role last year, I didn't think of her! Of course, if I had I would have ended up recasting, since she was at the WTC when it happened and I think she left town right away, and besides, Kirsten was perfect. But if I cannot have her, Ellen is also perfect, it's really great casting. I called her, and she called me back and accepted. So now I'm all cast for the French as well as Sister Mary! No more casting problems for me, I have all the actors in all the world!
I had rehearsal with Ann alone last night at her house. She lives in Stuyvesant Town, all the way on the East Side and downtown, and since I work uptown and almost as far west as you can get, I told her that I'd be there at 9p. It's a late time to start a rehearsal, I know, but I didn't want to leave work early when I didn't have to, especially since I'll bet there'll be alot of that coming up. Of course, I was hideously late. I have yet to be on time to a single one of my rehearsals, but I was almost as late as it was possible to be. I came in crying, "The sun was still up when I left work!" I had to wait a terribly long time for both buses that I had to take, not to mention the actual bus trips themselves, meant that I was I don't actually know how late, since I don't have a watch, but it was at least 40 minutes. At least she was waiting in her own home, and it's not as though she was going anywhere else or anything. It was a pretty good rehearsal besides that, though. She is going to be unbelievably good as soon as we can get ride of a little bit more of her natural sweetness. I think this show is going to be one of the best things I've ever directed.
