10 July I was exhausted yesterday, possibly because I, for reasons unknown even to myself, decided to stay up until 3a the night before. What is the matter with me? I know not what. Especially since I really was getting up early yesterday, to beat The Raccoon into work because I had forgotten to email her the list of checks that needs paying this week. Of course, I ended up getting caught in traffic and got to work after 10a, so there was no beating to be done. However, she hadn't started the run yet, so I was able to get my list to her anyway. Although, when it comes right down to it, she's actually cutting the checks today, so I totally could have slept in to my heart's desire, but what's done is done. That's sleep-deprived water under the bridge.
In the middle of the afternoon, I got a frantic, slightly hysterical phone call from Moira.
"I got a call from a kid!"
As you can see, Moira was thrilled, I was bemused. This was what, the fourth or fifth almost-kid I have gotten, I could not get all excited on spec again. So I called the mother, and arranged for her and Alex to come to rehearsal last night. When they arrived, he was a very nice little boy, with an extremely Irish face for a Jewish kid (I asked the mother whether she would have a problem with what some Catholics consider anti-Catholic sections of the show, and she countered by asking if I minded if he was Jewish, so everybody was happy!) and I had him read. He was okay, he doesn't read really fluently, and some of the words were unfamiliar, but all in all he was okay. My one big worry is if he can learn the lines in ten days, since that's when we open. The mother was a little reticent, since Alex is on hold for a commercial that shoots in LA, but I told her that I'd rather have a kid than not have a kid, and that if he dropped out I'd deal with it. So I have a kid! And I can get as excited as Moira was, now, because it's such a weight off my mind. Of course, now I need to worry about whether he will learn his lines or be any good, but basically, all I care about is that I got one.
