12 January Back at work yesterday. The day off was lovely and sweet, pizza tummy or no pizza tummy, but at least there was work to do, which has been very slow since I came back from holiday. Normally, I don't mind not having work to do, but it does get a little old after awhile.
I watched the Nationals, the men's short programme, and Matt Savoie just rocked my world. Where did he come from? He never has been this good before, he wasn't nearly so interesting last year, though I wasn't watching much skating last year. It's like he grew into his body, he grew into his arms and his height. There is nothing more lovely than seeing a tall male skater, the jumps look more exciting, everything is extended--it's like what I love about skating is when people really finish the moves, they don't just go from move to move, everything is done before you go to the next move, and when there's a little height involved, it's magical. And you know what? After writing that I looked up his bio, and he's only 5'9"! Well, I guess it's true for the mere illusion of height as well. Anyway, his short was so beautiful that Dick Buttons was just howling, "He's going to the Olympics! I'll bet you a donut that he's going to the Olympics!!" though my favourite moment was when he called Matt's spin combination 'spiffy'. Of course, he was screwed by the judges. He gave the only perfect performance, he got the only standing ovation, both Todd Eldridge and the tiresome Tim Goebel fell on their asses and were marked higher than Matt, apparently because they are Todd and Tim, not because of what they did. And then was the long programme, which was a disappointment all around. Matt's long wasn't as interesting a programme as his short, and he was under-marked again, so he ended up in fourth position. i.e., not going to the Olympics. If he hadn't been fucked by the judges in the short, he would have gone instead of Michael Weiss. Now, I love Michael Weiss, but I don't think that he's much of an asset in an Olympic team, since he has spent so much of the last two years absolutely falling apart on the ice. At least Matt is still young enough to hang around for 2006.
Non-skating fans? You'll be doing alot of skimming during the Olympics, sorry in advance.
