(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

2 January

Okay, I want to make is perfectly clear that I am not getting the year off to a bad start by not uploading yesterday--Kinko's was again closed, caring more about their employees' well being than yours! Not to mention mine.

Ah well, later today I will be home with my own computer and my own provider and no more 20¢ a minute (minus a 15% discount with Mom's TV Academy card) and I can upload any time I want!

Meaning that when I'm five days behind it's no-one's fault but my own.

So yesterday I got up and watched the Rose Parade, the channel 5 coverage, which is the best because it repeats all day long, and we were going to go over to Bernyce's party, but first our neighbour Joan called and wanted us to come over.

I totally forgot to call my oldest friend, her daughter Teri, this year, I don't quite know why, but I had her present, so I wrapped it and gave it to Joan, who gave me her yearly package of Aplets and Cotlets (my favourite candy), and we sat and visited with the family, and the younger daughter Stacy, who was visiting with her husband and a friend who wanted to talk to us because he wants to be an actor.

Mom and I did our double act of trying to shout each other down that we often do in company, or me making little jokes in the middle of her long stories as she takes a breath. I think it's more entertaining than annoying, but I would, then, wouldn't I?

We left after a bit and went to Bernyce's.

She has been having this New Year's Day open house since I was a little kid, but I haven't gone since before Daddy died, either because she didn't have it or I didn't go myself, or we went to Craig's party instead.

We got there an hour before it actually was over, and I was all prepared with a book (The Bee Season for Beth's book club, that I am loving with all of my heart), but ended up talking to someone for most of the time instead. Go figure!

You see, Bernyce and my mom have this friend, Gloria, who has a son whom I have seen at this party over the years, though I never quite got his name and once I spent a couple of hours talking to him thinking he was Bernyce's younger son, Carey, as they have a similar look.

This time, since I no longer shy about asking someone who they are no matter how much I should know already (once the answer was "You directed me last year!"), I asked, and his name is Jefferson. This does not sound familiar at all, so either I never did know his name, or it used to be Jeff. And who can remember someone named Jeff? I've met my quota of Jeffs and Marks and Kevins and have no room in my head for another one.

Anyway, we sat and talked until his mother wanted to leave, and it was really cool--he was really good at seeming interested at everything that I said, so he's either very polite or I'm more interesting than I think I am (which would be tricky, considering the high opinion I tend to have of myself). He's awfully straight--I doubt he has many hidden tattoos or anything, but since Gloria is quite a character, I don't think that my unusual appearance struck him as particularly odd.

Before he left, I asked if he was online, and gave him this URL, so if you read this, Jefferson, the boy whom I have managed to now most of my life without actually learning his name, it was nice meeting properly!

Then was the Honeybaked Ham and listening to Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar and Dragnet on the KNX Drama Hour.

I'm halfway between sorry I'm leaving and can't wait to get home. When I'm here, sometimes I think about staying, about how much easier it is here, but that's basically because I'm on vacation and if I lived here I'd have to work and stuff and it wouldn't be all sunshine and Disneyland and being fed by my mother, it would be just like NY, only with a different bunch of friends. I'm ready to go home.

Of course, I have to be at work tomorrow morning, and that's no joy, but besides that, I miss home and being on my own and my beloved TiVo and the internet and my kitties and everything. And really, you can be on vacation for too long.

This isn't too long, but it would be soon, and I'm ready for my real life to start again.
