(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

30 December

Yesterday was all about church and food and movies. Church in the morning where I bitched and pissed and moaned about the fact that we never ever get to sing anything at this time of the year but bloody O Come All Ye Faithful and bloody Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and I am so sick of those hymns.

Then we went to the Academy and saw Nicholas Nickelby.

I was obsessed with the TV version of the play back when it was new, and still am, frankly. I had it on audio tape for years and could recite long sections of it, I knew it so well. This new movie is quite good, and the performances are great (some a little better than the stage actors), the only problem is the black hole in the role of Nicholas. What an insipid blonde bore! The actors around him, particularly Christopher Plummer, we glorious, though, and of course it's still Nicholas Nickelby.

After that we went to the best restaurant in Los Angeles if not the world, The Porterhouse Cafe.

They have a tiny menu, but everything is exquisite, and though I'm certain that the lamb is very good, if you come to The Porterhouse Cafe and you don't have a porterhouse steak, you are an insane lunatic. Don't even mention the vegetarian entree, honestly, you should just stay home. But the steak is amazing, and the side dishes, and they have a chocolate lava cake that they probably serve in heaven.

Not to mention the cotton candy! They bring out a plate of the greatest cotton candy that anyone has ever tasted, with a sparkler in the centre. It's a great mental image, this high-class white-tablecloth restaurant with a cotton candy machine in the back.

Then it was back to the Academy and we saw Gangs of New York.

Afterwards I said, "I think we just saw the Best Picture winner for this year." It is astonishing, incredible. Of course, as a New Yorker and an Irish person, I identified strongly with it, but I think it's the kind of film that speaks to everyone--immigrants, children of immigrants, everyone. If Scorsese doesn't win for this one, he should just give up.

Today's horoscope:
There's virtue in restlessness and power in curiosity. Claim the things that you were meant to know. The unseen world is easy to map once you get a feel for it.

One year ago today:
There is one moment, though, where they are at the top of a tall building, and you see all of Manhattan in this huge shot, and there was the Twin Towers behind this guy's shoulder, and I just burst into tears.
