22 August I saw the most astonishing thing last night, the moon, but like no moon ever seen before. I wished that my camera battery hadn't just died, but even if it hadn't I know that any photograph wouldn't have turned out properly. It was sunset and I was crossing the street, and I turned my head east to check for traffic, and just gasped aloud. The moon was rising, huge on the horizon, and bright orange. I know that you are all thinking, "I've seen that, I've seen a big, low harvest moon before," but you have not, you've never seen anything like this. Usually the moon is about as big as the nail on your little finger, right? Maybe as big as the pad on your thumb. This moon was as big as my fist, and I am not exaggerating one bit, it looked like the huge false moon in A.I. I was crossing the street, and it was too big to see properly in the space between the buildings. I could only see it while standing in the exact middle of the street, which is a bit tricky with the traffic bearing down on me. I walked up to the corner so that I could go into the middle of the street again, but the corner is more uphill than by my building, and once I got up there, the trees were blocking alot of the moon, I could only see corners of it. So I went to the bus stop, thinking that when the bus arrived, I'd be able to see it while I was on it. But by the time the bus got there, the moon had risen too high and was behind the buildings. So that was it, I really only got to see it standing in the middle of the street down by my office. It was so amazing looking, I've never seen anything like it and I never will again, so perhaps it is fitting that I only was able to see it fleetingly.
