2 September Yay, Labor Day Weekend! A three day weekend! Yay! One that means the end of summer. Boo! And how do I know that it's really the end of summer? The fact that on Friday, which was still August, might I add, I saw the first Hallowe'en display in Duane Reed. That's a big giveaway, that is.
I went into work yesterday, which somewhat defeats the purpose of a three day weekend, but it was Saturday, so I still get two weekend days in a row today and tomorrow, and I really wanted to get those checks matched, so I went in for about five hours. I would have stayed longer, but we were having a family party and we have had so few this summer that I didn't want to miss it. I know that I say this every time I go in on the weekend, but I really do love it inordinately. This time is was because I was playing the DVD of Les Miserables in Concert and singing along at the top of my lungs, and there was nobody to hear me. Glorious. That's my idea of a civilized way to work, singing musical comedy as loudly and as operatically as possible.
Stars, in their multitudes
The family party was un-missable not only because it was only the third one this summer, but because it was also the Big Set-Up between Fran's brother Steve and Kirsten from Love Creek. When it was first mentioned, I thought that Cynthia and Fran were insane, not that I dislike either Steve or Kirsten, they are both swell, I just didn't see any way to connect the two of them, but as the evening wore on, I thought that it might be possible. Especially when they bonded over a mutual hatred of the film Gone With the Wind. Hey, you take your moments where you can. Actually, I got there at 7p, about an hour later than I had planned, and was very afraid that I had missed all the food, but this was probably the first cookout that we had ever had without JonDaddy manning the barbecue, and the Bumbling Callahan Brothers were somewhat less competent at getting the thing lit, so the food hadn't even started cooking yet. Apparently, I missed the part where it was like watching Tom Hanks try to start the fire on the beach in Castaway, but when I got there there were flames shooting out of the grill, and clearly there was some time to wait before the coals calmed down enough to cook on. In fact, they ended up being absolutely perfect about three hours after we had actually finished eating. Good thing we didn't wait, as we all would have resorted to eating each other like the Donner Party.
It ended up being really fun and went on for hours and hours and ended with us showing Kirsten and Steve Ol' Mange, because no-one enters our home these days without being forced to see it before leaving. It reminded me how much I want to shoot Naked Ambition. I really must get up off my butt about it, especially since it will have to work around Jennifer and Ed coming in from DC and the fact that it's twice as long as Mange and requires at least five if not ten times as many shots, and will probably require four weekends rather than two. Not to mention the fact that Cynthia wants to put it back on the stage before we do it again, because it's farce and is all about this split-second timing, and it will go much faster in filming if it's all rehearsed for the stage. And since I will be doing Catherine's role, I need to rehearse so that I can manage to act with Cynthia and Fran being naked and pretending they aren't without laughing my ass off. Not the easiest task imaginable.
