7 October Rehearsal yesterday, rehearse rehearse rehearse. And for the first time I met the other two women in the show. You see, my one-act is in four sections, each with a woman and a man, the men all being played by the same actor and the women all being different. Aly, who plays the woman in the third section, has either been at all of my rehearsals thus far or has been just leaving as I arrive, but the other two have been a mystery to me. One of them, Leslie, I know and have seen many times, but the other, Liz, is a new company member. Her role is smaller and less showy than the rest of ours, but she does have the capper of the piece, she does have the surprise ending, so it's not as dull as it might appear. Well, she cold-read it the first time, and all I could think was bleh, though of course, it could easily be because she just plain isn't a good cold reader, and I thought I'd reserve judgement until the next rehearsal. But honestly, she kind of sucked. Then we rehearsed Leslie's piece, then went back to Liz, and her second reading was flat out terrific! I have never seen such a turnaround from bad cold reading to well-thought-out and presented full performance in only ten minutes! I keep telling myself no more snap judgements, but I may be too old a dog to learn that trick.
Afterwards I went to work, and I was there from 5.20p until 2a. I had about a million things to do, and I worked like a coolie the whole time, no slacking (I watched Natural Born Killers twice, but that was while working), but at the end, I felt as though I hadn't done a thing! My pile of work to do still looked as big, and the pile that I had done didn't look as though it should have taken eight hours of un-interrupted work, but somehow it did. Got a lift home from our new car service, and the driver actually got out of the car to open my door! It was terribly luxurious...
