(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

25 November

So yesterday was the reading downtown, the Marathon Benefit for the Riant Theatre.

Poor Riant, down by the WTC, was having their big benefit, and we were there to perform, to help them stay afloat. Well, we got there, and the theatre looked closed, there were no signs up indicating that there was anything going on, we went upstairs and there was no-one in the box office, all in all, it looked as though we were there on the wrong day. But it wasn't that. It was just that this was the least effective benefit ever in history.

Everyone had an hour slot, and ours was 4-5p, but no-one had the 3p slot (another bad sign), so we were able to go into the space and rehearse with Betty, who wasn't there last weekend, until just before 4p.

Our audience of 5 showed up, all friends of the playwright, and then we were waiting for her daughters to arrive, so instead of starting, the playwright read a 25 minute long poem, which just slayed me. I was inappropriately giggling backstage, the longer it went on, and Al was laughing, too. Cynthia kept playing the teacher and glaring.

Finally, the daughters arrived, and we did our bit, got a couple of laughs, but since our play is a nice little piece that is about nothing and where nothing happens, we didn't expect more than that. The other play after us, though, was a lesbian siamese-twin incest play in a laundromat, that I could not believe was written by the same woman! It was as though she used up all of her interesting on the one play and nothing was left for us.

Lesbian siamese-twin incest play. I'll bet I get some strange search-engine hits from that sentence!

As we left, there was no audience at all for the 5p slot, and the box office was still closed, and the building still looked abandoned.

I wouldn't count on this theatre staying open if this is all they can muster for a big blow-out benefit.
