21 May Yesterday was a lovely sitting around the house kind of day. It was cold and rainy out (still is, what has happened to this weather?) and I neither even once stepped outside nor felt guilty for not doing so. I had gotten my first two Netflix DVDs, so I very happily spent the day watching them. Do you know, I had never seen Die Hard, though I did see the two sequels when they came out, somehow the original never crossed my eyeline lo these many years, and you know what? It's really great! I mean, one would imagine that most films with multiple sequels would be good to start with, you know, logically, but what tends to happen is that all people remember is the sequels--I mean, the original Rocky is just a lovely, sweet, small independent film, about as far away from Rocky V as you can get. It's interesting how things change, I mean Die Hard was the kind of film where the hero is not omnipotent, can and does get hurt, and it's possible that her could fuck everything up and everything can be ruined. All these films, Die Hard, Rocky, Lethal Weapon all star out with a flawed hero who can lose, but by the time you get to the third sequel, he is a magical man who can never lose, because, well, he hasn't! Plus, Bruce Willis spends a good deal of the movie either shirtless or close to it, sweaty, dirty, and covered in blood, and we all know how that is my bag. And any movie with Alan Rickman in it can't be bad.
Spinal Tap, on the other hand, is a movie that I have seen so often, I can recite long stretches from memory. This DVD, however, is so wonderful that even though I am sort of doing this so that I won't have to buy so many DVDs, this one I'm still getting as soon as my no buying year is over! What's so great about it? First of all, as I had heard, the alternate audio track is Nigel, David and Derek (Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer) all talking, in character, about when the movie was being made and how Marty DiBergi made them look stupid. "Most of the time, we did find the stage, but this time is the one that he showed!" O my God, it's hilarious. It's incredible how they took this film that I know like the inside of my own mouth, and made it new and funny again. But wait, there's more! There is also something called "rare outtakes" that you would think is just a scene or two like it is on most DVDs, but it is actually an hour and ten minutes all cut together, and it's basically a second movie. The first movie is only an hour and twenty minutes, it's really a companion film! And it's all just as funny as the stuff in the first film. What the fuck ever happened to Bruno Kirby, though? He's a stitch in this film, and he's got some great stuff in the outtakes, and for awhile there he was constantly working, but now I never see him. Come back, Bruno Kirby!
Lenten entries missed: Jessamyn got lost, told a very funny story about Chris Elliot, sang an American tune, and lost her job. But she is going to get a much better one! Who wouldn't want her in their firm? No-one worth working for, that's for certain.
