29 March Okay, so I lied. I woke up before my alarm for the fourth day in a row, but every day it's closer and closer to the alarm (Monday it was an hour, today was a minute), so I actually have been sitting here for an hour and three quarters, just fucking around. Therefor, no vacation entries this morning. I will this weekend, honestly. Stop that laughing!
Anyway, on Tuesday night I went to see Memento, which I was dying to see, and I was so right. This is just the most extraordinary film, really great, you must go see it! Now! It's about a man named Leonard whose wife was raped and killed and he bashes his head and gets brain-damaged so that he no longer has any short-term memory. He can remember everything up to the point that his wife died, but after that, everything fades after about ten minutes. And he's trying to find the man who killed his wife. So it's a detective story where the detective cannot remember anything. He keeps track of clues and who people are and what is going on by taking Polaroids and making notes on the backs of them, and with the things that he doesn't want to forget, tattooing them onto his body. And the really cool thing is that the movie takes place backwards, it starts with him killing the man that he wanted to kill, and then goes backwards, scene by scene, so at the beginning of every scene we don't know what came before it, just like Leonard. It's just the most exciting, interesting film, a film where you have to pay hyper-attention at all times, but also a film where you want to pay hyper-attention at all times! Guy Pierce plays Leonard, and, besides the structure, he is the reason that this film works, because he plays it so matter-of-factly--it's really terribly funny at times. The other two main actors, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano are also great, very strong, it's probably the best thing that I have ever seen Joe Pantoliano do. I really loved it with all of my heart, a smart, funny, wildly entertaining and interesting film, beautifully written and directed, with great acting, what is not to like? Also, Guy Pierce takes his shirt off plenty.
