15 March This week has been all about losing things. First I spent days looking for two mix tapes that I was listening to last week, that have got to be somewhere pretty close to plain sight, then was the whole passport thing, then on Tuesday I spent half the day looking for a small pile of papers that I had had on my desk at work about thirteen hours before. Finally, that night, I found it in a pile of other papers that I had looked through probably twenty times. It gives me hope that I'll find the fucking passport.
Good news, though, I finally have a place to stay in London! I emailed my friend Rosalind and very rudely invited myself to her house for six days, and she said yes! Sucker! So I may not have a passport yet, but at least if I do manage to get over there, I won't be sleeping in Green Park!
After writing about Hannibal the other day, my friend Andrea sent me this link, and, in reading it, I realized that they were right, and that what Hannibal really is is a sweeping love story. Gone With the Wind for freaks. I've started reading the book, that I have had for a bit but hadn't gotten around to, and I'm really loving it. I really want to see the film again. The other great thing about that is that I was reminded about Salon! It's not a journal! It's something I can read on the net! Man, you have no idea what a thrill it was to realize that.
I don't know about you, but those commercials about the random groups of B-list celebrities living together as a family (Sally Jessie Raphael/Chuck Woollery/Pat Morita/Little Richard and Loni Anderson/Mr. T/George Hamilton/Mary Lou Retton) are the most hilarious commercials in all of the land. I cannot remember the product name, so they are not actually effective, but boy are they brilliant.
Last week, though I keep forgetting to mention this, which means that I am thoughtless and ungrateful, I got the most lovely gift in the mail!
It is from a reader named Julie Miller whom I have never exchanged an email with, so I couldn't thank personally, and it is this wonderful picture book called Cat Heaven all about, well, Cat Heaven, where cats have all of the nicest food and cat toys and sleep in God's bed, and sometimes come back to see the house where they used to live, where they were so happy. I stood there reading it, tears streaming down my face. Now it's upstairs, because I lent it to the kids, for Fran to read it to them before they go to sleep, having removed the dust cover and with strict instructions that those children don't even touch it. Thank you so much, Julie Miller! It was the sweetest gift imaginable.
And a belated congratulations to Jenn on the birth of Hadden! And a thank you to all my helpful elves for keeping me updated on the whole thing, since I cannot read it myself. How long before Easter?
