29 June Well, yesterday was quite a day, in that it was the last day before vacation and I had to work like a dog all day in order to wrap everything up before going to Canada today. Amanda came round my office to drop off her big pack, because there was no real reason for her to drag it all around Manhattan in a heat wave. When she arrived, I took one look and started laughing. She wore two packs, you see, one in the front and one in the back, and because both packs stuck out really far and she's kind of short, she was just about as wide as she was tall. She was a complete circle. And with the pack at my desk, it meant that every single person who came round for the whole day kept saying, "Hey, are you going somewhere?" I felt like I should put a sign on it saying, "I'm going to Canada for a wedding for the weekend, this is not my pack, I'll be back Tuesday."
I had decided to leave at 7p, because I still had to pack and things and get up at 4a, so I called home and left a message that I'd be home at 8p, reminding them that I was bringing the Australian back to sleep in Katie's room, and for heavens sake be clothed. Then I ended up working until 9p, sending out all of the checks that needed to be sent out, and putting Amanda to work as well, when I found that the sealer on the postage machine wasn't actually sealing anything, and like a hundred envelopes needed taping shut. Then we went home and I apologized for making them be clothed for two or three extra hours in a heat wave in this sweaty house.
So I bundled Amanda into Katie's room and started doing laundry and packing and washing the dishes and things. And watching a terrific show called "The Family Fiennes" on Bravo Profiles that I wanted to see because I think ol' Ralph is fine and dandy, but it was really the story about the family itself, and this astonishing woman, Jennifer Lash, the mother of Ralph and his five brothers and sisters and one foster brother. This woman was not only an artist as far as writing and painting went, but she also viewed being a parent as an art, and from the look of her children, she was an expert. All of them were interviewed equally, and they all seem to have an air of being comfortable in their skin, which is the greatest gift that a parent can give a child, the gift of knowing who they are. I believe that it is a gift that my parents gave me.
Anyway, I went to sleep at 2.15a and got up at 4.15a. How was this different than any other trip that I had ever taken? Not one jot. If I get more than three hours sleep, I don't feel like I'm on vacation.
