17 June I woke up to the sound of pouring rain. Hopefully it will break this terrible heat--I hate walking down the street at 11p and seeing the temperature on a sign say 85º.
So, yesterday I spent most of the day at work. There is something about a Saturday at work that I really like. And I think that thing is no damn people. I do love alot of the people that I work with, but when it comes right down to it, nothing makes me happier than a big empty office where I can play my DVDs or sing along with the radio in a big loud voice, and besides the fact that I can work much faster with no interruption. Actually, more than my office mates being gone, it's the lack of phone calls that really fills my heart with glee. I remember being in college, waiting for the phone to ring, calling the operator to check to see whether the phone was still working, I should have counted my blessings, baby.
After putting in a good six hours of time-and-a-half (I love working hourly), I decided to go to the flicks again, and saw Sexy Beast. It's a pretty good movie, it has some structural problems, but it's not bad, the reason to see it, though, is the performances. Ray Winstone is quite good in the lead, but there are two really great performances in this picture, two really good reasons to see it, one is obvious and the other shocked the hell out of me. As the scariest man in the world, Ben Kingsley is marvelous, and terrifically cast. He's absolutely terrifying, but no superman, this is a real character, a real person with real motivations, not an all-knowing monster. Of course, part of the reason that you know that he is the scariest man in the world is because the other characters tell each other before he even shows up on screen, so we're all primed and everything, but Ben really earned it. And he's funny, too, my favourite bit is this man, whose first line in the film is, "I'm gonna go change my shirt, I'm sweating like a cunt," later referring to his penis as his "front bottom". And, as the boss of the scariest man in the world, Ian McShane was incredible. He exuded absolute power. I used to have a big crush on him, he was gorgeous in the old series, The Saint, and he took my breath away in Gypsy Girl, but he lost his looks long ago. He didn't have the kind of face that aged well, and since all he was was his looks, I didn't expect much of him in this role. But he rocked my world. Good for you, Ian! I'm very proud of you.
Happy Father's Day, Daddy, miss you lots.
