(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

14 January

So today was Molly's fifth birthday! We are having the party tonight, and I usually talk about yesterday in an entry rather than today, but as far as history is concerned, and so that you lot who are keeping the really careful notes on my life get it clear, Molly Callahan's fifth birthday was on 14 January 2001.

A funny Molly story, recently, she got her hands on some of her father's porn, which, for some unknown reason, had a picture of two naked man in each other's arms, one with his head buried in the other's chest, and she said, "Daddy, why is one man sad that the other man is sleeping?"

It's all a matter of your point of view. I guess.

So, yesterday was rehearsal #2 (or #3 if you count the readthrough with just me and Cynthia and Fran on the sofa) and my first with the whole cast.

I think that this is going to be a really strong show, as the cast is just great. This is the first time that I have ever directed one of Le's shows, and it's the first time that this play has ever been produced at Love Creek, so I have no idea what the secret right way to do the show is. Or, conversely, the secret wrong way.

Not that Le is the kind of person to trick directors, but this is a thirty year old play about himself and people that he really did know back then, and I'm only working from the playscript, not the memories that I don't share. The ending is a little ambiguous, but I have decided that it is much sadder than it seems and that, in fact, the main character is going to die and I'm going to hint at that. Whether the real girl died or not, I don't know.

O well, I'm not really worried that he's going to hate what I did with the show, but sometimes when the characters are from life, if what's on the stage is not the same as what really happened, playwrights can be thrown for a loop.

Afterwards, I went to the movies.

I need to make my SAG nominations soon, being on the committee and all, and I really am taking the responsibility seriously, so I don't want to make my nominations before seeing a few more films. I really should see Quills and The Gift and Requiem For a Dream and Billy Elliot and maybe Nurse Betty and The Contender, all of which I have on video or DVD. so I thought that I would go for broke and see a bunch of movies.

Well, I went to the Sony and saw O Brother Where Art Thou, What Women Want and Traffic. Were any of those on the above list? Of course not, since I had already seen two of them, and the third, What Women Want, is pretty unlikely to be needing nominations.

I swear, I have no priorities.

But it was wonderful to see those two again, such different types of films, almost exactly opposite from each other, in fact, both of which I adore with all of my heart. Clooney and the loveable Tim Blake Nelson and all that great music in this dreamlike fable, and Benicio Del Torro and Don Cheadle and Luiz Guzman in a gritty, documentary-like story.

I saw the funniest interview with ol' Benicio recently, where the interviewer said, in a surprised tone, that he had heard that Benicio, who is from Puerto Rico, had actually learned Mexican Spanish so that his accent would be right!

I don't know if it's an American or a native English speaker thing, but I think it's hilarious when people think that it's only English that has different accents, that all Spanish and French and German are all only one thing.

And, if I might add a personal response, Benicio's accent in Traffic, all of those sshh sounds, like the cat in Mutts, is just so hot, especially when he is speaking English, When he asks for "A Boodweisshher", it just puts me away.

According to his bio, Ainsley is the most popular TV chef in England. Why do I have a feeling that this is some sort of elaborate British practical joke?
