13 January A conversation with The Raccoon yesterday:
"You know that I won't be in on Monday."
On 22 December, my ex, Greg, had a new baby! Well, actually, his wife, Elaine, had the baby. I didn't even know that she was pregnant, so it was quite a surprise. Well, last week I got an email from him inviting all of the American family and friends to come to Scotland in March for the christening (who do they think they are, Madonna? That's a joke, Elaine is Scots.). I thought, yeah, sure, like I could go to Scotland in March. But it's been marinating in my head ever since, and I suddenly thought that maybe I could go, I mean, why not? I haven't been to London, to my home, in nearly five years and it's breaking my heart. Greg sent airfare samples, which weren't bad, and stated that accommodations and travel within Glasgow would be taken care of. I thought that if I were going, I certainly wouldn't be going to Glasgow for three days and then going straight home, I would need to go to London for a few days, and before I knew it, I had figured out a ten day trip, three days in Glasgow and six in London (the remaining day is the overnight travel from New York) for $441. It would only be $334 if I were just going to London, which is astoundingly cheap, but I didn't think that I could go over because of the christening and not actually go to the christening. I haven't bought the ticket yet, because I need to have my mother agree to lend me the money, but it looks like I'm going home! Hopefully some kind soul will want to put me up in London for six days in March--I will be almost no trouble and hardly ever be around, spending most of my time at the theatre and museums. I used to always stay with Rita and Simon, but they moved to California, then I stayed with Greg and Elaine, but they live in Switzerland now, so I'm somewhat at loose ends. It will all come out in the wash, but right now I'm just thrilled that I will be in London! I'm going home.
