1 January Well, tomorrow I go back to NY, and the next day I go back to work. I need a vacation from my vacation. Not to mention the fact that I have been utterly spoiled by the fact that the daytime weather has varied wildly from 75º to 78º during my stay and now it's time to get myself back to reality. The reality of snow.
What haven't I talked about yet? Let's see, on Saturday I...what did I do? I mean, what did I do first, because I remember most of the day, just not the start. Well, I did something or other that was thrilling and exciting and makes a wonderful story (theoretically), and then my mother got it in her head that we should go out to the frickin beach to show my movie to the Lansfords. There is no reason that this would be a problem, except that I was seeing Pamie and Stee at 4p in Hollywood. Of course, we got to the beach half an hour late, and Mom refused to leave until 4.05p, and we caught some traffic going back, so I was 45 minutes late and the first words that Pamie and Stee ever heard me say was, "It was all my mother's fault!" They are supercool, as expected, and we sat at this cafe and drank soda and I bummed far more cigarettes than a person who doesn't smoke should (i.e. none) before they gave me a lift home before going on to the Weezer concert. I got a good view of The Pamie and Stee Show, which is terribly entertaining. It's like jumping rope to get a quip in, a little "Look, I'm funny too!" but I think I held my end up nicely. Hopefully they will come to NY sometime this year, because honestly, everybody needs to come to my town eventually, that's one of the reasons that I live there! I feel like when I met Kim Rollins, I wanted to meet her so much and I really had a great time, but afterwards I was completely unable to write an interesting word about it. This "I met Pamie and Stee and they were real nice and everything was swell" story is exactly as memorable. 2001 is off to a great start, creativity-wise!
Yesterday was New Year's Eve, and first thing Mom and me and Rita went to see the Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues. It was really wonderful, the music and the food, and at first it reminded me of a cruise ship, as there was so much food, and you could keep going back for more, and then there was the show, but then I realized that what it really reminded me of was the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland. At the Enchanted Tiki Room, you see, there are real Hawaiian dancers and singers and musicians all performing their real skills in this absolutely false environment, and that's was the Gospel Brunch was like. I mean, these are real gospel singers, no question about it, they are very talented and heartfelt, but the room really isn't a tin-roofed shack in the bayou, it's a musical theme park. I do recommend it, though, as it's a hell of a show. So to speak.
After that, I had an hour and a half to get to see Diane and Child, so we didn't rush, we stopped at Staples and got some stuff, and then, on the way out of the parking lot, my Mom backed smartly into a brand new rental car. There was just the smallest little scratch imaginable, but the car was new, so they will probably see it when they give it back. Anyway, I was 20 minutes late for Diane, but this was a much better excuse than "My mother made me go to the beach and show my movie!" Diane was great, and Her Pookiness was just a stitch and a half. Diane understood that my seeing her was only an excuse to see the baby, but I think that this is something that all mothers learn quickly. You know, until the kids are seven or so and are no longer adorable tots.
For New Year's Eve, Mom went to a party and did not make me come along, thank Christ, so I just stayed home and watched The Unknown Chaplin on PBS, switching over to Dick Clark for the ten minutes before the ball dropped, said "Happy New Year" to my balloon from Disneyland, as though I am Tom Hanks talking to the volleyball in Cast Away. This is my idea of an ideal New Year's Eve!
What did you do on New Year's Eve? And we are still talking about our New Year's Resolutions, dying our hair all kinds of colours, Disneyland, and what we got for Christmas.
