(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

16 February

Okay, the fact that I cast this show in one shot, with no recasts, is now coming back to haunt me. The universe has noticed and is punishing me.

To review, we did the show The Hot Dog Machine two weeks ago and it went so well that we were extended and are performing it again next week. We were offered Wednesday through Sunday, but had to subtract Saturday because Cynthia is doing a murder mystery that night and she is the lead and impossible to replace.

Merry Jayne is in a wedding that weekend, but she has a small role, and so I was going to go in for her on Sunday night. Sabine I would have to replace altogether, because she was going to Europe, but it's only two scenes and a quick study could pick it up without too much difficulty.

This was all fairly doable, I thought, and relaxed after the show closed, sort of realizing halfway through the next week that I really had to get off my butt and re-cast. Cynthia's suggestion was Laura, who would be perfect in the role, but who was unable to rearrange her schedule, so I went to Le for a list of actresses to call.

There was only one on the list that I recognized, Evie, who was in that horrible monologue show I did before Christmas, and who has that wild quality the role calls for, and who is quick and responsible and stuff. I called her first, she was home and accepted the role.

We decided to rehearse on Tuesday night, but then she got a paying acting job for Tuesday night and we had to cancel. We were rehearsing Thursday, Sunday, Monday, teching Tuesday, opening Wednesday. No problem!

Until yesterday when I got a call from her in tears saying that she had had a death in her family just a few hours before and was going home and couldn't do the show. And telling me how sorry she was that she was screwing up my show. I called her back and told her to please not worry about it for heaven's sake, to go home and be with her family and not even think about the show. Poor Evie.

However, I could tell her not to worry about the show, but I still had to worry about the show. So I called Le and told him, because of course I had thrown out the list that he had given me before, and he gave me a couple of girls to call, and I offered them their choice of either the two scene role for the run or the one scene role on Sunday only, because I could certainly play the other role, Evie and Sabine's role. Neither of them were available.

So we had the rehearsal and at the end of the rehearsal I said "The worst thing that could possibly happen is that we drop out of Sunday night's performance, and that's not a bad thing at all, because there are four other one acts in the evening and it should be long enough without us!"

And then I emailed Le, suggesting that rather than hysterically looking for a last minute girl, that we could just do that. And he said okay.

So, now we are set! And I'm goddamn in a show that I am directing again, which means that I need to get someone else to do my six light cues and nine sound cues without screwing them up, like the guy did with my two light cues and one sound cue at every single performance the last time I did this double duty.

But really, the last thing I have any right to do is feel sorry for myself, I don't have a death in my family, I just have to jump into a show. Thank God.

I still didn't impress The Raccoon much, 'cause she's used to me, but I felt terrible wild, like Titus Andronicus.
