4 February So, last night I went to the movies after the show. I was going home, but suddenly realized that I felt well enough, and hadn't gone since I got back from Christmas. There really isn't anything to see that I don't have on video from being on the SAG nomination committee, except for Snatch, but I would have to wait an hour before the next screening, so I just thought what the hell, and bought a ticket for Quills. It really was awfully good, and nice to see on the big screen, and besides, I know myself, I know how long it takes for me to watch something on video. Geoffrey Rush was just swell, really lascivious, Joaquin Phoenix had just as rotten an accent as he did in Gladiator, but I have started to be able to see past that, Michael Caine was all about frightening cold-eyed evil, and Kate Winslet made more of a role that could just have been the centre of adoration by the men in the film.
***SPOILER*** (run your mouse over it if you want to see)
All in all, though not the best movie of the year, certainly one worth seeing, a film that actually has something to say about the responsibility of artists, and the effect of art, with valid arguments on both sides.
