(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

30 December

Christ, how short is Jack Black? In the commercials for Orange County, aka The Movie That I Am Not Going to See, he looks as though he's on his knees in that two shot with the younger brother.

I mean, he was pretty short in High Fidelity, but John Cusack brushes the sky, everyone looks short next to him. He should have played one of the Hobbits, they wouldn't have had to use any trick photography.

Yesterday was all movies all the time, well, two movies and a party, so I was close.

The afternoon movie was Kate and Leopold, which was absolutely charming. I mean, it's Hugh Jackman, what else could it be, but as opposed to Swordfish or that appalling Ashley Judd "new cow" film, the one that isn't called Animal Husbandry, it's an actual good movie. Go figure!

Hugh is basically the Perfect Man in this film, and is completely, one hundred percent believable. I saw women in the lobby afterwards gathered around going, "Now, he's Australian, right? What have I seen him in?" and this is the Academy, rarely the bastion of girlish behaviour.

Dear Liev Schrieber, who will someday get the girl in a movie, was kind of screwed, being in the farcical part of the film rather than the romantic part, though he had some lovely moments near the end, and Brecken Meyer as the brother did a fine job, and Meg Ryan was just fine, though she was done no favours by her hairdresser. I like her normal tousled look, but this poker-straight version just makes her look old. And since she acted it swell, there was no need to make her look so unattractive.

Maybe she pissed off someone in the lighting department.

The party, which came between the two movies was Mom's old agent, Erika's party. I just cannot get into this party, I go every year and I am never happy.

Erika is a really great lady, and her husband died this year, so I certainly wanted to show her my support, but her friends, though lovely people, are on a completely different plane than me. I cannot think of a single word to say to any of them, nor them to me. I sit there, looking at the paintings on the wall with a mild and pleasant expression on my face, and no-one bothers me.

I never claimed to be either social nor nice.

Fortunately for my mental health, I left after half an hour to go to the late movie at the Academy, Vanilla Sky.

It wasn't the Cameron Crowe-i-est Cameron Crowe movie around, but that didn't break my heart too much, as I really liked it besides that. Tom Cruise was really really good, every time I see him in a movie, I remember that I have forgotten what a good actor he is.

It sort of reminded me of A Beautiful Mind, in the whole what is really happening kind of feeling, and I really liked it alot, Jason Lee always makes my day, and Cameron Diaz was very spooky, and I certainly see why Tom fell for Penelope Cruz, (I have decided that it is much easier to believe that that happened than to get all twisty about it--the "what's really real" in Tom's life is as bad as the movie) I fell for her myself and I'm not gay or anything!

There is one moment, though, where they are at the top of a tall building, and you see all of Manhattan in this huge shot, and there was the Twin Towers behind this guy's shoulder, and I just burst into tears. It was a very moving part of the movie, too, about choice and destiny, and it just really struck me hard. I'm so glad that Cameron didn't digitally remove them.

But when it comes right down to it, the one that I want to see again is Kate and Leopold. Again and again and again, I am thinking. Perhaps hoping for someone to come from 1872 for me is as practical as anything else!

Today's horoscope:
Foreign food tastes zestier today. Go out to eat or fix the family an ethnic dish. Broaden your culinary horizons.

One year ago today:
"I gave you 4.7 seconds to eat that food young man, and now the window of opportunity had closed. Perhaps we will feed you again next week. Now go home and get back into your dungeon!"
