29 December I can tell I am coming to the end of my vacation, I have started running around getting things done. And I still haven't called Teri yet or seen Rita and time's going fast.
Yesterday I finally took my computer to the Gateway to get repaired. I brought it home so that it would get fixed while I was gone, and then I don't even bring it to get repaired until practically the end of my vacation. Sounds like me. Anyway, I brought it to them, and they intimated that they might be able to fix it in-house rather than send it to Texas, so there you go. I took the DVD card out of the slot, because the store in Paramus has beaten it into my head that if I included my DVD card, I would never get it back ever ever ever, so I didn't give it to them. Later they called and said, "Maybe the reason that your DVD played isn't working that well is because there should be a DVD card in the slot. We can sell you one if you need one!" so I have to go back and bring them the card for testing.
After that we went to Omaha Steaks to get the free gifts that they give out when they open a new store, and also some lamb chops and things, then to William Sonoma to return the blowtorch that Mom went out on Christmas Eve to get and then tortured the salesman by making him show her how to use it until she understood, which was about ten times. I drooled over everything in that store, it's as bad as Restoration Hardware. Then we got some ice cream and went to Jana's. That is a tiny clothing store in the Valley that Mom loves. They have clothes that no-one else does, they have the styles six months before anyone else, if I ever had to go to the Oscars, I would have them dress me. They had a beautiful long silk coat that Mom had her eye on for me, and the coats had just gone on sale that day. I saw this great Norwegian reversible coat that I liked better, but it was $500, so I said that I'd take the silk one instead. Mom said, "It's not this one or the other, it's this one or nothing!" I thought the coat was okay, until I put it on, and I loved it. It's really warm and light and long and doesn't hang on me like a bag. It's super-stylish. It's as stylish as my glasses. Shit, now I have even more to live up to! I cannot take the pressure!!
Then we went home and Melanie came over to pick me up and we went to dinner at dear old Marie Callander. They are well-known for having the best chili and cornbread in the world, so I had chili and cornbread. I'm a slave to tradition. I have pancakes at the House of Pancakes, too. But they are famous for their pies and I had no pie, so I have a small bit of backbone left. After dinner we went to the $2.75 theatre near her house and saw Heist, which was really fine. Everybody was great, Gene Hackman of course, Danny DeVito, Delroy Lindo (who made a great double act with Hackman), Mamet's pet Ricky Jay, but especially Sam Rockwell, as far as I am concerned. He just slays me. Sam can be real big and hammy like in The Green Mile and Galaxy Quest, but his work is always really grounded no matter how big he gets, and he can also be really subtle like in Charlie's Angels and this. And I kept watching him to see if he was going to leave the reality of his character, because he left himself very little room to move, but he always stayed right where he should. Rebecca Pidgeon was good, too, and her propensity of never sounding like she is telling the truth worked in this role as well as it did in The Spanish Prisoner. Then we went back to my house, and I played Melanie the songs, because not a day can go by without my playing them for someone. She liked them, of course, because they are the most wonderful tracks in the world!! Not that I am prejudiced.
And because she whined, congrats to Melissa for getting engaged to a really swell guy! And the reason that I haven't mentioned this before is because she told me before she announced it to the world and then said, and I quote from memory, "Don't mention this in an entry until I do!" but I haven't been reading journals from Kinko's so I didn't catch when she did! But I am happy as can be for them, they are one of the best matched couples that I know and I am over the moon about it.
