(La Kymm Puissante--vous ne verrez pas rien comme!)

9 Août

So last night was Glenn Tilbrook at the Mercury Lounge!

I have seen him there three times before, twice in '97 ( here and here) and once with Squeeze after the Fleadh in '98, and all at the Mercury Lounge, where the trade-off for being in such a tiny place and being right up close to the acts is that you have to stand the whole while, and it gets to be like some sort of endurance test.

It was unbearably, oppressively hot again yesterday, and I just sat in my lovely cool office thinking, "Am I sure that I really want to go? I could stay here and work in the cool, wouldn't that be nice?" but I knew that I really did want to go, and besides, I had already bought my ticket so that would be $15 pissed away for no good reason, or rather, given to Glenn, and though I am very happy to give him $15, but I'd rather, you know, hear him sing at least one song for my cash, so I finally flung myself out the door and into the horror.

It said on my tickets that the doors opened at 7p and the show started at 8p, and I knew there would be an opener, so I didn't actually leave the office until 7.35p, and took the bus downtown, which was slow as shit, so I only got there around 8.30p or so, and stumbled through the crush at the bar to get to the back room, where the opening act was playing.

It was this bearded blonde fellow, looking remarkably like my friend Gregg David, and I had no idea who he was, but was entranced almost immediately. The first thing that impressed me was the way he was singing this quiet ballad while there was all this talking at the end of the room and every time the door to the bar opened, which was about every 45 seconds, this roar of noise came in, but he never flinched or made faces or did anything but carry on singing exactly as he had been all along. His concentration and commitment were admirable.

I had the impression that it was like he had these stories that he had to tell, and he would tell them whether anyone was listening or not, and it was extremely mesmerizing. He was really personable, too, and silly between songs without breaking the spell. At one point, he was signaled that he had only five minutes left and he said, "Five more songs? Okay! A lot of people turned cold at that remark...I believe he meant five minutes. Which, including banter, is about half a song!"

His songs are really long, you see.

My main problem was that I had no idea what the hell his name was. At one point he mentioned that he has an album and a mailing list and a website, but didn't actually mention the URL, which I assumed was his name, but since I still didn't know his name, I was in the dark! It was only at the very end of the evening, at the cd table that I saw that his name is David Poe.

I'm going to come to the show early tonight to see his whole set, he really seems like a singer that I could get into--smart and funny and melancholy, just what I look for in a man.

O, I've gotta go, I'll tell about Glenn himself tomorrow!
