(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

28 September

Hey, I've caught up! It's the entry for the 28th and I'm writing it on the 28th and I'm going to post it on the 28th, whaddaya know about that!

However, it's Thursday and I haven't written about Monday yet, so I'm still behind, but at least I'm behind in a normal way, not a pretending it's a different day way!

And how did I get behind in the first place? I went to Philadelphia, to Colleen's shower. What am I doing this weekend? I'm going to Philadelphia, for a girl's weekend! I promise that it won't happen again. I think.

Monday it was rainy and cold, so I wore a sweater and a coat, but I couldn't find my shoes and had no idea where any of my socks are, so I wore my sandals. Five months of wearing sandals, you lose your socks!

After work, I met up with Tracing for the SAG screening, and we saw Dancer in the Dark.

I had heard about this film, that it was impossible to have eh feelings about it, either you thought that is was the greatest movie in all the land, or you thought it was the most appalling, pretentious piece of swill imaginable.

Personally, I am firmly in the camp of the former, I though it was astounding, original, beautiful, emotional, and devastating, though I could certainly see how it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

It's all handheld, so if you got motion sick at Blair Witch, you might not like it, though Tracing got sick as a dog and she loved it despite that! Also, if you don't especially care for Björk, she's all over this film, I'd avoid it.

But even with the knowledge that half of the people who go off of my recommendation will loathe it, I can't help myself--I must recommend it whole-heartedly.

It's the story of Selma, a Czech immigrant, slowly going blind and working in a factory and saving all of her money to give her son and operation so that he won't go blind as well. She leads a hard, gray life, so as a distraction, in her head she imagines elaborate musical numbers.

It was shot on digital video, which gives it a very realistic, home-movie feel. I think that the camera is closer to the actors than a film camera can get, so you really get inside of their emotions. One of the things that I admired in the film was how it didn't turn away form emotion, everything was much bigger than usual, but because it didn't cut away, it wasn't silly, it was heart-breaking.

the performances were incredible, Björk and Catherine Deneuve and my beloved David Morse, but the surprise for me was Peter Stormare, quietly stunning as the man who loves Selma. It drove me crazy, trying to figure out who he was, he looked so familiar, then I looked him up and he was in Fargo, he was the other kidnapper, the one who put Steve Buscemi in the wood-chipper.

Yesterday I was on the phone with my Mom, and she told me that she had seen the movie on Sunday, but that she walked out about a third of the way in. Because she thought it was bad? No, because she couldn't take it--she was sure that horrible things were going to happen to Selma, and she didn't want to see.

I don't know if that wouldn't be a compliment to the filmmaker!

What breaks your heart?

And we're still talking about doing what we didn't think we could do, working with children or animals, Drugstore.com coupons from Kim, waiting until the last second to do something important, unlikely fears, strange things overheard, travelling with a band, not being noticed, what surprises us about ourselves, icky stories, our most recent trip, the most spontaneous thing we've done lately, how we feel about medication, new movie recommendations.
