(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

27 September

Okay, where was I? O yeah, I was making my movie and it was Sunday.

While I was shooting the dog and the boy, Tracing came round to shoot the production shots and the poster. I had had a new idea for the poster the night before--my original idea was Cynthia and me by the graves, but after I dug the fifth one, I suddenly thought of a much cuter idea, of having a shot of the dog graves with the puppy sitting perkily in the open grave.

Of course, this idea came before seeing how much the puppy had grown, and before we worked up the dog so hugely by shooting him with Bobby , so sit in the grave that dog wouldn't. But he was very happy to dig the grave, which made for a funny picture, too--a line of graves with a dog's ass poking out of the last one.

Funniest thing I said all day, before shooting the poster, "Wait, let me plump up the graves!"

Then, I got into my costume again (and, at that very moment, it suddenly got warm for the first time that day) and we shot me and Cynthia by the graves and then went inside and created a scene by the tree, because I need a shot for the Sundance package.

Then we did a director's shot with Ed and Jenn, with me pretending to tell them what to do. "Pretend that I know what I'm talking about and you're going to hop to it, rather than reality, when I said 'You know what to do better than I do!'"

It was very hard not to giggle when I was pretending that I was all forceful and competent.

Then we went out and did the grave shots for the film, first covering everything with rolls of cotton-wool to look like snow. Cynthia, being the professional background person that she is, had seen it done before, and she and Tracing got down on their hands and knees and covered up the dirt. I tore off pieces to sit on the tops of the gravestones, like little drifts.

It's amazing, though, how much it looks like cotton in life, but when filmed, it just looks exactly like snow.

Then we had lunch, and then, running out of time, we looped some of out lines.

Looping is when the line didn't turn out right in shooting, there is noise or words are swallowed, or, in our case, we said it differently one take to the next, so there isn't another track that can be used, because in the take we are using, Cynthia said "You would want my little Leroy..." and every other take she said "You would want little Leroy..." so when Ed tried to replace the sound, it looked like Cynthia had a tic.

Normally, looping is done in a soundbooth, while watching the film and fitting it to your mouth, but we watched our bits on the TV several times, and then went into the dining room so that the room tone would match, and tried to match the mouth as well as we remembered it. Leaving a small pause between bits, so that if Ed had to cut or tighten, he could.

Then they had to run fast like little bunnies, so that Ed would make his train back to Boston, so I drove them into the city.

And no, I did not get lost!

And we were wrapped, and the movie is finished, all that needs to happen is that Ed works himself to death and does a final edit by Wednesday so that he can sent it to me and I get it on Thursday and I send it to Sundance and they get it on Friday, and then we wait and see!

But, as I said before, the goal wasn't getting into Sundance, it was making the deadline, so I'm happy whatever happens.

What did you do that you didn't think you could do?

And we're still talking about working with children or animals, Drugstore.com coupons from Kim, waiting until the last second to do something important, unlikely fears, strange things overheard, travelling with a band, not being noticed, what surprises us about ourselves, icky stories, our most recent trip, the most spontaneous thing we've done lately, how we feel about medication, new movie recommendations.
