24 September What a day! On the one hand, it is the first weekend day in two weeks where I didn't have to set my alarm and get up at dawn, if not before. Weirdly, I woke up an hour before I planned, but I wasn't tired, so I just got up. After breakfast, I was going to go into the city to shop, but I realized that the one thing that I couldn't do without was the graves, so I thought I'd start with them. And I had an idea. Rather than having four graves and the shovel to mark the fifth, when not have the fifth dug and waiting for the next dog to die? Of course, this meant that I had one more to do. So I went to the corner of the yard that I was digging up (earlier this summer I said to Jon, "What are those plants beyond the purple flowers?" "Just weeds." "Well, they are coming along nicely!" "Yes, we're going to have bumper crop!") and started ripping up weeds by the armloads. And disturbing mosquitos by the armloads and all. And the chinloads, as I have just the most impressive bite right on the point of my chin! Then I dug and dug and dug some more. And sat, gasping. And got up and dug. Fielded questions from Molls and dug. Dug dug dug. I felt like I was Beth, double digging her garden. It makes for a great sense of accomplishment, but I cannot imagine doing it for fun! And the dirt was all full of rocks and roots and it was just exhausting, and then I had to get down on my hands and knees and shape the graves, but by the time I was done, they looked absolutely great! I wonder what the neighbours thought?
Then I had to made four different gravestones. I knew that I was going to make one a cross out of sticks, and I realized that the little wooden box that we use to block Baldrick from crawling under the fence at one point, the one that Bonnie loves to sit on, would make a nice one as well, so I only had to find two. Then Cynthia suggested the leftover paneling in the Christmas closet in the basement, which was perfect, so I only had one more to dig through the garage to find, as I knew that we had lots of scrap lumber in there. Except that apparently since the last time I looked, it was cleaned out. And there was nothing but flats and logs skinny boards and I couldn't find a single thing that was useful! I mean really, what up with that? There is always supposed to useful crap in a garage, that's what a garage is for! Then I happened to see next to the garage, and there were some sort of metal, sort of stone-ish things sheets of something there, and I had my fourth stone. Cynthia said that she thought that they were asbestos, and not to cut it, but it was the perfect size as is, so no cancer for me. But I had other stuff to cut, so I got out the saw and cut down the stick and the paneling and felt all hard and butch, especially since I didn't actually saw off any body parts. Always a plus, and a surprise when it comes to me!
So, the graves were dug! And I relaxed. The fact that I still had to go into the city didn't faze me, 'cause I had plenty of time, right? Well, not really. I hadn't factored in the fact that Ed and Jenn were coming over in order to show me the latest cut and talk over what we would be doing today, time being somewhat limited, as Ed had to catch the 5p train back to Boston. By the time that I remembered they were coming at 6p, it was close to 5p, and I dithered about whether I had time for a quick trip until I did not have time for a quick trip. When Ed and Jenn arrived, we had a very useful chat about the shoot, both of us having come up with the same ideas separately about two different things, one being that the bits with the kid and the dog can look like old-fashioned home-movie, which will make everything much easier for us, as it can look messy as hell and the choppier the better, really. The other one was that the graves will appearing in black and white, which is something that I had thought of and discarded, but when it was mentioned to me again, I thought that if Jenn had thought of it as well, it must be a good idea after all!
At 7p I rousted us all into the city and found that, yes, I certainly damn well should have gone in earlier, as every place I went to was closing. Dammit. And whatever happened to Christmas starting early? Every year people bitch and piss and moan about how the season starts too early and blah and blah and blah, but the one time that I need to buy Christmas wrapping paper in September, not a sausage! I couldn't even find anything solid red or green, except for tissue paper, which I certainly bought, but I wanted some real paper as well. Too bad for me. Nothing but cartoon characters and photos of golf balls and things. I got a couple of rolls of flowered paper, but I didn't know if I'd use them. Then, a brainwave. I got a red paper tablecloth to wrap the puppy box with! I am such a genius. I managed to find some dog stuff, but the whole thing took me four hours because I had to wander all over the city looking for places that were open. Had I done this, o, anytime in the three weeks or so that I have known that I needed this stuff, it would have taken maybe two hours, if even that long. Ah well, it's done, now all I have to do is finish the movie! At this point, I don't know that that will be the easy part.
What important thing did you wait until the last second to do? And we're still talking about unlikely fears, strange things overheard, travelling with a band, not being noticed, what surprises us about ourselves, icky stories, our most recent trip, the most spontaneous thing we've done lately, how we feel about medication, the one right way to do things, self-knowledge, running out of time, new movie recommendations, what we need to be happy, our offices, vocal tics, and bad movies we love.
