10 September Boy howdy was I ever sick yesterday! I'm telling you, there is nothing less likely to make you feel better than bundling yourself up in leggings, boots, winter skirt, turtleneck, parka, gloves, scarf and wooly hat with a bobble on top in 90° heat with 100% humidity. Especially that bobble. But, being the director and the co-star, I had to just do it anyway, though I tried to arrange it so that we did Cynthia's closeups all in a row so that I could have the coat and gloves off as often as I could. The hat stayed on so that it would match. When I took off my coat for the last time in the afternoon, everyone gasped, because I had completely sweated through my turtleneck. The things I do for my art.
Before I saw the first playback, I decided to throw away any ego I had, to look at the film rather than hoping that I would look pretty, because I knew that I would not. I dressed myself so that I would look silly, it would be no surprise if I did look silly rather than attractive. Well, I look like Cartman. I am the fattest thing that ever has been preserved for the ages, I am frightened to think how much fatter I will look on a bigger screen than the two" playback screen, the coat makes me look about twice as wide as I actually am. Not to mention the wooly hat. In one shot, I looked so enormous that I practically scared myself, but then I started laughing, because I looked so cute. Not cute like Julia Roberts, but cute like a living Weeble wearing a wooly hat with a bobble on it. It really works for the character.
I was supposed to wrap at four so that I could go to Colleen's wedding, but I just felt so bad that I thought that driving for an hour would be a very bad idea. I heard it was great, too. I love you, Colleen, have a great honeymoon!
Awhile back, when I mentioned that I was doing this, I got an email from this girl named Jennifer, who said that she was a professional sound person, and that she'd love to help, and then followed up by offering her husband Ed's services as well. I suggested putting him behind the camera, since there was nobody but Fran to put there, and he was a last resort. She said okay, but that he wasn't a professional camera person. Well, you couldn't have told that from the way he handles the camera and the playback results. Both of them were so competent, so professional and together, that it was this huge weight off my shoulders. They could do everything, and to such as extent that it really hit me what it would have been like were they not there. Would I have known what "white balance" and "room tone" and "wild sound" are? Sure wouldn't! It wasn't only how good they were at everything, it was also what a nice atmosphere we all created together, Jennifer and Ed and Cynthia and myself. Those three would save me from making hideous errors (like altering the axis, which would make the world explode), and suggested better shots than I had thought of, and just made everything run so smoothly, that I realized at one point exactly how bad the film would have been if Jennifer hadn't sent me that email. It would have been a well-acted, beautifully written, crappy-looking movie. Jennifer and Ed are my angels. I think I'm going to have to by them a car or something.
It seems that in yesterday's entry, I did my mailto link wrong, so here it is right, if you want to join my private list, just send a blank email here. And if you want to unsub from a different adress, sub from the new one first, and the unsub directions are in your welcome message. And Deb, you bounced! I didn't unsub you, but you still bounced, did you get your welcome message?
Who is your angel? Who saved your ass? And we're still talking about our offices, bad driving stories, bad hair days, our sense of direction (or lack thereof), vocal tics, looking on disasters as blessings, To Do lists, feeling a great sense of accomplishment, and bad movies we love.
