14 October Yay! Weekend! Yay yay yay! This is actually the first weekend in six weeks where I have nothing to do and I can just sleep and rest and wiggle my toes in the grass and not make a movie or go to another state or look blankly at people that I haven't seen in twenty years. Ahhhhh...
Last night I decided to get myself to the movies, so I saw The Watcher. Did I ever talk about it in Rate-a-Trailer™, or was that during my no computer days? I think it was the latter, so let me sum up. I thought, while I was watching the trailer that it would be a write-off formulaic cop/serial killer flick but for the interesting twist of casting Keanu Reeves as the killer and James Spader as the cop, instead of the more predictable opposite casting. While watching it, I realized that I was entirely wrong, that this casting was the only casting. Spader, you see, has a blank face with an immense amount going on underneath the surface, perfect for a tortured cop trying to keep it together, while Keanu has a blank face with absolutely zippety-doo-dah going on underneath, perfect for a serial killer, dead behind his eyes. It's a good movie, exactly as formulaic as one would expect, but enjoyable and engaging. I'd love to know what Marisa Tomei did to the cinematographer, because he did he no favours with lighting and camera angles. Spader, all racked with agonizing migraines and unhappy memories, looks beautiful as the day is long. Marisa Tomei as the supportive shrink looks haggard and elderly. I'd say that she looks like she could be my mother, but for the fact that my real mother has a great deal fewer lines on her face.
Last week I saw Bait, I think I didn't tell you. And what a tiresome piece of shit it, too! I mean, I was pretty certain that it wouldn't be no Schindler's List, but I really wasn't expecting it to suck quite this hard and enthusiastically. Like a vacuum cleaner, baby. I went to it to see my man David Morse, who was just fine, I tell you, all big and strong and violent and mean and he even has blood on his face for a scene, and that made me happy as the day is long. Jamie Foxx, who is quite talented, was excellent as well. The problem was the fact that both actors so far outclassed the script that I was left wondering why they were slumming. I would only recommend this film to people who have crushes on either of the lead actors, who don't mind sitting through a rotten, 10th rate Fugitive/In the Line of Fire ripoff in order to see exchanges like this between the extremely tough and violent treasury officer and the petty criminal:
MORSE
FOXX
MORSE
FOXX
MORSE
I'm not certain how strongly I can express my wish to hear David Morse say those sentences to me, but in the opposite order. And it would all be good news, baby.
Today's emailed reunion picture from guest photographer and former hedgehog, John Hegner:
Did you go to your high school reunion? Why or why not? And we're still talking about being from a small town, family souvenirs, car-crash journals, our friend's mates, being a morning person or a night person, my old designs, what breaks our hearts, doing what we didn't think we could do, working with children or animals, Drugstore.com coupons from Kim, waiting until the last second to do something important, unlikely fears, strange things overheard, travelling with a band, not being noticed, what surprises us about ourselves, and icky stories.
