(The Mighty Kymm--you'll not see nothing like!)

24 May

So, yesterday after being all sick all day, and sleepy and cranky and coughing my wounded-goose cough, did I go straight home and to bed after work?

Sure didn't!

Remember how the night I saw Uncle Vanya I didn't see Moon For the Misbegotten because it was up on the board at 25% and I was holding out for 50%?

Well, a few weeks ago, when I was on my way to see Greg when he was in town, I passed the board on a Tuesday night and it was 50%, so I decided that Tuesday was the night to go.

Well, I forgot last Tuesday, and the closer we get to closing the harder it will be, so the prospect of torturing all around me with a protracted coughing fit didn't daunt me.

When it comes to seeing Gabriel Byrne and Cherry Jones do Eugene O'Neill, politeness doesn't enter into it!

And it was pretty great, too.

Cynthia and Fran saw it for her birthday treat, and both felt that Roy Dotrice as the father gave one of the greatest performances that they have ever seen. Fran thinks that it might be the greatest. I cannot argue. Everything he did was true and real, every word was clear as a bell, no matter how soused he was playing (no mean trick), and even with two big stars on the stage with him, he draws your eye--you can't stop watching him.

Gabriel Byrne, I had problems with at first. He's doing very strange things with his voice in this show, kind of high and husky, and I didn't care for him at all in the first act. In Act II, when I stopped wondering what he was doing, and I just got into his rhythm, I started enjoying him very much. The voice was of a man that was dead, a shell, and it worked.

Cherry Jones, on the other hand, was a surprising disappointment. I mean, I liked her, and she did some very affecting work, but everything felt just a little bit pushed. I never for a moment wasn't aware that I was watching a performance, everything was a little mannered and stagey. Of course, she was on a stage, but you know what I mean.

I kept thinking, though, that I would have given alot to see Colleen Dewhurst and Jason Robards do it.

When Cynthia and Fran came back from seeing it, Fran said that they had seen Le afterwards, and that he had said that the problem was that she and he are miscast together--that Josie is supposed to be bigger than him, not the other way around. I mean, she's no little dumpling, but she's about an inch or two smaller than he is, and she seemed to be acting as though she is a big girl rather than actually being one.

And Le said that the best casting would be me and Fran. And as I watched the show I thought, my God. I mean, very few roles actually require an actress to be a big ol' horse with a rough mouth and a secret romantic soul--I was fucking born to play that part. And Fran is an inch or so shorter than me, and I certainly outweigh him. And even if I lost weight, I'd still be right for the role, as no matter what, I'll still be huge. I have a frame like a linebacker.

Man. That would really be something.

For another opinion, see Anne's. The one thing that we both agree on is Roy Dotrice!
