6 May Man, this week has been quite a week. Several times in the past few days, The Raccoon and I would sit, staring dead-eyed into space, intoning: "We have so much to do..." I was going to see Tracing and Colleen last night, but they had had weeks just exactly like mine, and first Colleen pooped out, and then Tracing. I do not blame Colleen one little bit for not wanting to trundle into NY after a hard weeks work, but clearly Tracing just wasn't ready to give me my $40 back. And the con continues...
So, I could have gone home to see the game, but I suddenly had a yen to see a Broadway show. So, I went to see what was up on the board (at the half price booth). A Moon For the Misbegotten was up, which I'm dying to see, but not for only 25% off (I'll check back on a lousy night, like Tuesday or something, and if it's not 50%, I'll give up and just go); Superstar was up (o, those reviews were bad, but it couldn't possibly be worse than the movie, which I love anyway, 'cause I love the score so much) but Steve told me that they're having rush seats, $26 for the first two rows, so no point in spending more for worse seats! I'm such a visionary. So I decided to see Uncle Vanya. I hear the reviews were mixed, but if you are within the sound of my voice and you love Chekhov, go see it! And, more importantly, if you are within the sound of my voice and you hate chekhov, go see it! Do you think that Chekhov is dull, ponderous, mournful? Well, you've only seen it done badly, baby, because this was the way it should be, hilarious. Let me clarify--hilarious without tromping all over the delicate, sadder bits. I have been in love with Roger Rees since I was sixteen years old, and he is about the most perfect casting for Dr. Astrov imaginable--beautiful, but ravaged, and a force of life. Derek Jacobi as Vanya was perfect, because that's Derek Jacobi's job, Brian Murray as Serybryakov was great, and Laura Linney, whom I usually don't like much, was excellent as Yelena. On the other hand, the girl who played Sonia wasn't what one would call transcendent in the role (which should have been played by me, dammit), but that wasn't too bothersome, because when you've got Roger Rees and Derek Jacobi, the other roles could easily be played by seals and nobody would notice! And then I got home to find that the Jazz beat the Sonics, due to Stockton having flames shooting out of every orifice and are on to the semis, so it was a great evening all around! Look out, Portland.
Because this is so late, I certainly hope you're all reading that Journal of the Week! There will be a quiz, you know...
