22 March There are the most exciting things happening on Broadway these days! Of course, they are all revivals because there is nothing new under the Broadway sun, but there are just so many of them that I can't possibly leave them all until August for a birthday treat, but on the other hand, I don't know that I want to leave any them until August for a birthday treat, because they might close or be recast by then!
There's True West at Circle, my old stomping grounds, starring John C. Reilly and Phillip Seymour Hoffman from Magnolia and Boogie Nights alternating in the roles of Austin and Lee. It looks a little stunt-y, but I love both of these actors and think that they are fine heirs to Malkovich and Sinese.
Opening soon is Music Man, for the first time on Broadway since the original production. I adore this show, and if they don't trick it up too much--it doesn't need to be modernized for God's sake--it should be a real treat.
I'd give my left tit to see Moon For the Misbegotten starring Gabriel Byrne and Cherry Jones, but I can only assume that the box office would prefer $65.
Between the commercials and the fact that I walk by the theatre most days, I am singing snatches from Jesus Christ Superstar almost constantly. I really must get the movie on DVD. The movie is, of course, absolutely dreadful, this cannot be denied, but the music it still great, no matter what the hippie excesses of the production. I have great hopes for this revival, based on no actual information whatsoever, just because I so much want it to be wonderful.
Not new, but getting my attention because of all of the new things are Ancestral Voices at Lincoln Centre on Sunday and Monday nights, closing soon, but Edward Herrmann has rejoined the cast, and I haven't seen him live since I saw Plenty three times at the Public when I was in college, and my beloved Christopher Walken in The Dead.
Of all of them, the two that I am most desperate to see are Moon for the Misbegotten and Superstar. Clearly, it's time to start haunting the TKTS booth!
