20 March So, Saturday night after Bonnie's birthday party (I gave her CinderElmo, which looks to be a big hit), I went to bed at 11p, 'cause I was so exhausted, and got up at 10a the next morning, all rested and daisy-fresh. Who says you can't catch up on sleep?
I went to the darkroom to do the proofs for R. and Robert (I took shots of him for his soon-to-be website, and slam out a couple of shots for Cynthia's birthday (I always like to give her a handful of recent stuff). In by noon, out by three, it was pretty cool getting some work done and not killing the entire day!
So, I went to the movies! I stopped at the new Loews on 42nd St (which really needs to start putting some movie titles on the marquee rather than just a sign that says "Grand Opening" since it's been open for six months) and I wanted to see Erin Brockovich, but I would have had to wait a couple of hours, so I played the "What starts soonest that I have the fewest objections to seeing?" Well, that was The Ninth Gate. In the genre of Satan movies directed by Roman Polanski, it isn't the best one, but it was pretty fun. Johnny Depp was extremely good and understated, Frank Langella is just a god, and Lena Olin shows proof positive that she doesn't work enough. As far as Madame Polanski goes, she has a very pleasing countenance and fine, regular features, but really should never speak in a motion picture ever again. Plotwise it was very interesting and kept the tension going, though the faked New York shots at the beginning were terribly distracting, as all I could think was "Second unit!" and even when it staggered on a bit too long and had a big old fake-out ending, Johnny Depp's performance kept me with it. I don't necessarily recommend it, but it's a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon, especially if you are a fan of any of the actors involved.
Then I came home and didn't write my entry until like 10p. Shame on me. Look, Elton John was on VH1 Behind the Music, what would you have done?
